Escondido Public Library’s Summer Reading Club

Escondido, CA – This summer, prepare to savor some tasty reads with your little one at Escondido Public Library’s Baby Summer Reading Club. This year’s Summer Reading Club theme is Reading is So Delicious, and runs from June 17 – August 3, 2013. Parents and caregivers of children, ages 0-2, may sign up to participate by registering in person at the Children’s Room Information Desk starting Monday, June 17th. The last day to register for the Baby Summer Reading Club is Saturday, July 20th. Throughout the summer, parents and caregivers are encouraged to participate in activities with their child that include reading books, singing songs, and, attending story time events at the Library. Beginning June 19th, weekly baby story times will be held on Wednesdays at 11:00 A.M. in the Children’s Room. Suggested activities and more are listed on the Reading Log provided at sign-up. The Escondido Public Library is offering its annual Kids’ Summer Reading Club from June 17 to August 3, 2013. This year’s theme is “Reading is So Delicious” for all children who are Pre-Kindergarten to those entering 6th grade in the fall are eligible to join the Club by visiting the Library web site to sign up starting on June 17. The Friends of the Escondido Public Library will hold a 50% Off Everything Salestarting on Tuesday, May 28 thru Saturday, June 1, 2013. The sale will take place in the Friends Book Shop inside the Escondido Public Library, 239 South Kalmia Street in downtown Escondido. Friends Book Shop hours are 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and 10 AM – 6 PM on Tuesday and Thursday. The Escondido Public Library invites the community to help develop a dynamic new vision for the Library’s future by attending public meetings on April 27, 30, and May 1. Escondido Public Library has been a vital part of the community’s educational, cultural, and economic development for more than a century. The current library building, located downtown, can no longer accommodate the materials, services, and technology to support the community’s 21st century needs. Studies over the past five years have confirmed the need for an expanded library and City Council recently approved the initiation of a conceptual design study to reorganize the current building and add a new state-of-the-art wing. Literacy and Lifelong Learning’s FFL will host a spring program, Playing It Strong! Goes Into the Wild! This program is from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM on Thursdays, April 25th, May 2nd; and 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM on Saturday, May 4, 2013. Playing It Strong! Goes into the Wild! is a continuation of FFL’s winter program, where families and their children in grades 3rd to 6th identified their talents and strengths. Now, children will be connecting their knowledge from the 1st module of Playing It Strong!, while learning about animals. Parents and their 3rd to 6th graders will attend three meetings. In the first two meetings they will learn about animal traits and characteristics. Through interactive activities they will learn that like humans, animals have traits and characteristics that make them unique. World Book Night Celebration at Escondido Public Library

25,000 volunteers from Berkeley to Boston and Sitka to Sarasota will give away half a million free books in more than 6,000 towns and cities across the country through the World Book Night U.S. program. The Escondido Public Library will once again serve as a location for registered givers to pick up their book orders during the World Book Night Celebration on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 from 6:30 – 7:30 PM in the Turrentine Room. Those interested in participating in the future are encouraged to attend this celebration to learn more about the program and how to sign up for updates on World Book Night 2014. World Book Night U.S. is an ambitious campaign to give thousands of free, specially printed paperbacks to light or nonreaders across America on one day. Escondido Public Library teams up with Foli to offer digital magazines

The Escondido Public Library is offering iPad users the ability to read a collection of digital magazines for free when they use the Foli app. Foli uses patented geolocation technology to deliver digital content to consumers in specific locations and the Escondido Public Library is proud to be the first location in San Diego County to sign up for this exciting new service. Owners of iPads can download the free app on their next visit to the library. Virtual Strangers will be playing at the Escondido Public Library on Saturday April 13th, 2013 at 3:00 PM in the Turrentine Room of the Escondido Public Library. Virtual Strangers is a highly talented and energetic bluegrass band whose sound is a mixture of traditional bluegrass influenced by Ralph Stanley, Earl Monroe, and Flatt and Scruggs with more progressive material from Blue Highway, Lonesome River Band and some Del McCoury. A four piece band consisting of a banjo, a guitar, a mandolin, and a bass they still produce a nice three part harmony. “College Transitioning Series” Workshops at the Escondido Public Library

The Literacy and Lifelong Learning Department will host a three-part series of workshops beginning the month of February at the Escondido Public Library. “Your Career is Calling”, the first in the three part series, will be held Tuesday, February 19th from 6:00PM – 7:30PM presented by Director of Literacy and Lifelong Learning, Josephine Jones. Laura Kohl, Jonestown survivor, will be speaking at the Escondido Public Library

Laura Kohl, a Jonestown survivor, will tell of her experiences in the Turrentine Room of the Escondido Public Library on Monday February 25^th, 2013 at 6:00PM. She joined People’s Temple in 1970 and spent the next nine years working for the Temple in California and Guyana. She was away from Jonestown on November 18, 1978 when 913 of her friends and family died. The next twenty years were spent recovering, and rebuilding her life after that tragedy. She will tell about her personal experiences with Jim Jones and The People’s Temple and how she survived the tragedy of Jonestown. Her story of survival and recovery will be compelling to all.
