Escondido Public Library Hosts 14th Annual Scrabble-Thon Tournament & Fundraiser

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library and the Friends of Literacy Services will host the 14th Annual Scrabble-Thon Tournament & Fundraiser on Saturday, March 17, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will be held in the Auditorium of the Park Avenue Community Center, located at 210 Park Ave, Escondido, CA 92025. Doors open for player check-in at 8:00 a.m. and tournament play begins at 9:00 a.m. Players must pre-register by March 12, 2018 online at http://library.escondido.org/scrabblethon, by mail, or in person at the Literacy Services office, located on the 2nd floor of the Library. The registration fee for adults is $25.00; registration for high school students is $15.00.

The Scrabble® tournament consists of five 30-minute games and is open to adults and high school students. Players sign-up to play in one of three divisions: Novice, Intermediate, or Advanced. Participants can compete individually or as a part of a four-player team. Team play requires that all four teammates compete within the same division. Players compete for prizes at the end of each game as well as the final awards for highest individual and team scores.

Scrabble-Thon raises funds to benefit the Library’s Literacy Services program. Sponsored by the Friends of Literacy Services, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit Library support group, 100% of the proceeds will be used to provide literacy materials and resources. There will be opportunity drawings, a Pick-a-Tile game, and silent auction items throughout Scrabble-Thon. Opportunity drawing tickets will be on sale at the Library prior to March 11th and at the event. Donations are tax-deductible.

  • Recipes of Escondido - Contribute to Culinary History!

Share your family recipe, the story behind the recipe, and a photo, either online (http://library.escondido.org/recipes) or in-person at the Pioneer Room.   • 2nd Saturday Concert Series: Bayou Brothers - Saturday, March 10 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Bayou Brothers recreate the infectious sounds of a Mardi Gras celebration with their Zydeco-influenced blend of banjo, guitar, accordion, and rubboard.

Escondido Public Library’s R.E.A.D. Middle Grade Book Club Discusses A Wrinkle in Time: The Graphic Novel

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library’s Read, Eat, and Discuss (R.E.A.D.) Middle Grade Book Club for children, ages 9-12, will meet on Friday, March 9, 2018, in the Turrentine Room from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. Participants will explore A Wrinkle in Time: The Graphic Novel by Hope Larson. Registration is not required, but space and supplies may be limited. Circulating copies of the book are available for checkout and can be obtained at the Youth Services desk, while supplies last. Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin’s journey across time and space to save a loved one from a malevolent force, chronicled in Madeleine L’Engle’s Newbery Award-winning 1962 novel, gets the graphic novel treatment. The three children, with the help of guardian angels Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Which, and Mrs. Who, must face a terrifying darkness in the universe, one that seeks complete control of the minds on the planets it inhabits.

R.E.A.D. Middle Grade Book Club meets again on May 18, 2018, to discuss Hello, Universe by Erin Entrada Kelly. Library programs are free and open to the public. Expanded Hours & Tech Improvements Coming to Escondido Public Library!

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library is excited to announce expanded operating hours, including Sundays, beginning Sunday March 4, 2018. These changes are based on the direction provided by the Library Board of Trustees. They are as follows:

Monday – Friday        9:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Saturday                     9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Sunday                       1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

 

Escondido Public Library is also introducing technology upgrades that will improve user checkout experience, allow payment of fines and fees to be made with a credit or debit card, and provide better security and inventory of library materials. These are just a few of the outstanding ways your library continues to serve the Escondido community.
