08/20/2013 Categories: Book Club

The Escondido Public Library invites adult readers to join the 2nd Tuesday Book Club meeting on Tuesday September 20, 2013 at 6:00 PM, in the Board Room. This month’s selection is Sky of Red Poppies by Zahreh Ghahremani.

Sky of Red Poppies begins with a casual friendship between two schoolgirls coming of age in a politically divided 1960's Iran under rule of the Shah. Roya, the daughter of a prominent family, is envious of the fierce independence of her religious classmate Shireen. But Shireen has secrets of her own. Together, Roya and Shireen contend with becoming the women they want to be, and in doing so, make decisions that will cause their tragic undoing.   Set against the backdrop of a nation forced to mute its profound identity, Sky of Red Poppies is a novel about culture, politics and the redeeming power of friendships.

The 2nd Tuesday Book Club will continue on October 8, 2013 with a discussion on Toby’s Room by Pat Barker.  The selection for November 12th will be Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens.

All library programs are free and open to the public. Escondido Public Library is located at 239 South Kalmia in downtown Escondido. For more information about the 2nd Tuesday Book Club visit www.library.escondido.org or contact the library reference desk at 760-839-4839.

Bilingual Book Discussion Group Meets at Escondido Library

08/13/2013 Categories: Adults Book Club

Escondido, CA - Rincón Literario (The Literary Corner), Escondido Public Library’s bilingual book discussion group, will meet on Saturday, August 31st from 3:30 – 4:45 PM in the Library’s Board Room. Author and journalist, Miriam Ruvinskis, will lead the discussion in both English and Spanish. Un paseo para recordar / A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks is the selected book for August.

Sure to wring yet more tears from willing readers’ eyes, this forced coming–of-age story by bestselling author, Nicholas Sparks, is sure to do just that.  Every April when the wind smells of both the sea and lilacs, Landon Carter remembers 1958, his last year at Beaufort High.  Landon had dated a girl or two, and even once had sworn he’d been in love.  Certainly, the last person he thought he’d fall for was Jamie Sullivan, the shy, almost ethereal daughter of the town’s Baptist minister.  Against his best intentions, Landon finds himself falling for Jamie, this girl who is destined to show him the depths of the human heart – and the joy and pain of living.

Adult Services Librarian Paul Crouthamel said, “When you discuss a great book with others who have read it, you can share your perspectives and learn how other people might interpret the story differently.  The discussions are a perfect way to learn about interesting books and converse in both languages”.

Rincón Literario meets regularly on the last Saturday of each month to explore literature published in English and Spanish. In September, Rincon Literario readers will discuss La ladrona de libros / The Book Thief  by Markus Zusak. .

Rincón Literario is made possible by generous support from the Friends of the Escondido Public Library. This program is free and open to the public. For more information about future Rincón Literario selections and other Library programs, visit the Library’s website at http://library.escondido.org  or call Paul Crouthamel, Adult Services Librarian, at 760-839-4814.
