The 2nd Saturday Concert Series presents The Orvieto Piano Trio

11/21/2012

The Escondido Public Library’s 2nd Saturday Concert Series proudly presents The Orvieto Piano Trio. They are scheduled to perform on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 3:00 pm in the Turrentine Room of the Escondido Public Library. The Orvieto Piano Trio, featuring Lauren Basney (violin), Daniel Frankhuizen (cello), and Byron Chow, MD (piano), will perform an educational and interactive concert. They will introduce the audience to composers such as Beethoven and Dvorak with commentary by the artists. The ensemble is unique in that its members not only come from different parts of the U.S. but are currently pursuing divergent career paths - a testament to the power of music to communicate and transcend individual differences.

The 2nd Saturday concerts are free and open to the public and are generously sponsored by the Friends of the Escondido Public Library. The Escondido Public Library is at 239 S. Kalmia Street, Escondido CA 92025. For more information, please call (760) 839-4839 or visit the library online at http://library.escondido.org to learn about other upcoming library programs.

The Literacy and Lifelong Learning Department will be hosting a Glovette workshop at the Escondido Public Library from 6:00PM - 7:30 PM on Tuesday, December 4th. This workshop introduces Michele Aubuchon, the designer of “Glovettes”, who will bring in these fingerless gloves for people interested in wearing gloves to protect their hands from the sun or over a pair of traditional winter gloves just to glam them up. These gloves can be worn while still providing functionality to do most anything. They’re perfect as presents as the holidays are around the corner. School age children and adults are all welcome to attend. The creative fashion sense Michele has incorporated in her designs will attract many who are interested in expressing their creative sides and fashion styles and sharing them with others.

Glovettes was founded in 2011 with the goal of “providing wonderful products while raising money for the American Cancer Society”. This event is free to the public, but you must reserve your space by contacting Literacy Department Specialist, Natalie Mason at (760) 839-5450 or nmason@ci.escondido.ca.us. Learn more about Glovettes by visiting their website at www.glovettes.net.

This event will be held in the library, presented by Michele Aubuchon, designer of Glovettes, taking place in the Turrentine Room, on the second floor. Michele will display some of her own designer gloves as well as assisting others in glamming-up and decorating already-made gloves to take home.

Escondido Library’s Bilingual Book Discussion Group Meets November 24th

11/05/2012 Categories: Adults Book Club

Escondido Public Library’s bilingual book discussion group, Rincón Literario (The Literary Corner) meets on Saturday, November 24th from 3:30 – 4:45 PM in the library’s Board Room. The Escondido Public Library is located in downtown Escondido at 239 South Kalmia Street.

Rincón Literario meets regularly, the last Saturday of each month, to explore literature published in English and Spanish. The discussions are a perfect way to discuss interesting books and converse in both languages.

The selected book is the bestselling classic memoir La Vida Loca /Always Running by Luis Rodriguez.  It is the searing true story of one man’s life in a Chicano gang—and his heroic struggle to free himself from its grip. By age twelve, Luis was a veteran of East Los Angeles gang warfare.  Lured by seemingly invincible gang culture, he witnessed countless shootings, beatings and arrests, and then watched with increasing fear as gang life claimed friends and family members.  Before long, Rodriquez saw a way out of the barrio through education and the power of words and successfully broke free from years of violence and desperation. At times heartbreakingly sad and brutal, it is ultimately a true story filled with hope, insight and a hard-earned lesson for the next generation.

Rincon Literario will not meet in December but will meet again in January when readers will discuss Deshonrada/In the Name of Honor   by Mukhtar Mai.  A list of future Rincón Literario selections is available at http://library.escondido.org. For more information on the library’s book discussion groups and other programs, visit the library website or call 760.839.4601.

Rincón Literario is made possible by generous support from the Friends of the Escondido Public Library. This program is free and open to the public.
