Escondido Public Library’s Rincón Literario Book Club

Escondido, CA - Rincón Literario (The Literary Corner), Escondido Public Library’s Bilingual Book Discussion Group, will meet on Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 3:30 – 4:45 p.m. in the Turrentine Room to discuss this month’s selection, El océano al final del camino/The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman in both English and Spanish. The book is available for check-out in English and Spanish, and in a variety of formats, including print and eBook. Copies can be reserved at library.escondido.org.

Escondido Public Library Hosts El Día de los Niños, El Día de los Libros (Children’s Day, Book Day)

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library will celebrate El Día de los Niños, El Día de los Libros (Children’s Day, Book Day) for children ages 5-12 on Thursday, April 27, 2017, from 3:30—4:30 p.m. in the Turrentine Room. This program features bilingual stories from Mexico and around the world, songs, and crafts. El Día de los Niños, El Día de los Libros connects families and children to books, the joy of reading, and the diversity of cultures in our community.

El Día, as it is commonly known, is inspired by Mexico’s annual El Día del Niño (Day of the Child), and serves as an introduction to rich family traditions preserved in the community. It is also a nationally recognized day, especially celebrated by libraries to emphasize the importance of literacy for children of all backgrounds. Escondido Public Library’s program will feature story time beginning at 3:30 p.m., followed by craft stations for puppet-making and tissue paper flower bouquet creation. Participating children may receive a free book, provided by the Friends of the Escondido Public Library, program sponsors.

Registration is not required, but plan to arrive early as craft supplies and books may be limited.

Escondido Public Library Presents 10 Steps to Financial Success

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library, in collaboration with San Diego County Credit Union, will host a money management workshop on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Library’s Turrentine Room.

Discover how to make educated financial decisions based on clear priorities by following 10 easy steps. Learn how to establish financial goals, create a spending and savings plan, organize financial documents, and ultimately delete your debt. Space is limited and early arrival is encouraged.

Celebrate National Library Month in April Unlimited Possibilities @ Escondido Public Library

Escondido, CANational Library Week is celebrated April 9 to 15, 2017, to raise awareness of the resources, programs, and services offered by libraries everywhere. Escondido Public Library extends this celebration throughout April with its own National Library Month, showcasing special programs and services offered to the community. The Library offers endless opportunities to access information and technology that enhance lifelong learning, nurture the love of reading, and enrich lives.

In addition to weekly children’s programs and monthly adult book clubs, a host of special events are offered during National Library Month. Highlights include:

  • Saturday, April 8 • 3:00 p.m. - 2nd Saturday Concert Series Presents Adrienne Nims and Spirit Wind performing contemporary and world jazz.
  • Saturday, April 15 • 1:00 p.m. - Escondido Writers Group Presents: Open Mic! - Local writers are invited to read samples of their current work & receive constructive feedback from other writers and audience members. Writers should arrive by 12:30 p.m. to secure a time-slot.
  • Wednesday, April 26 • 11:00 a.m. - 10 Steps to Financial Success. Learn how to establish your financial goals, create a spending and savings plan, organize your financial documents, and delete your debt.
  • April 27 • 3:30 p.m. - Dia De Los Niños / Dia De Los Libros. Celebration with music, storytelling, and crafts honoring children, families, books, and reading.

2nd Tuesday Book Club Discusses Circling the Sun by Paula McClain

Escondido, CA - Escondido Public Library invites adult readers to join the 2nd Tuesday Book Club meeting on April 11, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in the Turrentine Room. This month’s selection is Circling the Sun by Paula McClain. Copies of the book are available for check out and may be reserved in the Library catalog at library.escondido.org.

Circling the Sun is a fascinating portrayal of Beryl Markham, a complex and strong-willed woman in 1920s Africa. An author and aviator, Beryl was a determined woman who wouldn’t let social conventions stand in the way of her achieving her dreams. This fictionalized biography is a New York Times bestseller full of surprises. Through the facilitated discussion readers may discover new perspectives and share impressions with other dedicated readers. The 2nd Tuesday Book Club always welcomes new and returning participants.

Escondido Public Library’s 2nd Saturday Concert Series Presents Adrienne Nims and Spirit Wind

Escondido, CA - Escondido Public Library’s 2nd Saturday Concert Series proudly presents Adrienne Nims and Spirit Wind on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in Escondido Library’s Turrentine Room. Adrienne Nims and Spirit Wind play high-energy contemporary and world jazz using Native American, Indian, African and Asian flutes and percussion, as well as more traditional jazz instrumentation. Escondido, CA – A celebration of local writers and authors, Escondido Writers Group Presents: Open Mic!, will be held at the Escondido Public Library on Saturday, April 15, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. in the Turrentine Room. Emerging and established writers of all genres are invited to participate and share their work with other writers and audience members in this creative and supportive environment.

The American Library Association’s National Library Week takes place April 9-15, 2017, to raise awareness of the resources, programs, and services offered by libraries everywhere. As a part of the observance, Escondido Public Library will host a special edition of its monthly Escondido Writers Group meeting, an “open mic” event to celebrate local writing. Participants are encouraged to bring samples of their current writing projects to share and receive constructive feedback. Writers who want to read their work aloud are required to arrive at 12:30 p.m. to sign up.

Escondido’s Local History Archive Offers Extended Hours

Escondido, CA – The Pioneer Room, Escondido Public Library’s local history archive, announces a new schedule of hours to better serve the community. With the new schedule, hours on Tuesdays are open to walk-in patrons and extend into the early evening. Hours on Wednesdays & Thursdays are initially open to walk-in patrons, followed by appointments to conduct research or confer with archival staff. The Pioneer Room’s new schedule of hours begins on Tuesday, March 7, 2017:

Tuesday                                 2:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Wednesday & Thursday     1:00 to 3:00 p.m.; 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. by appointment.

Escondido Public Library’s Pioneer Room is the primary historical research center for the City of Escondido. The Pioneer Room identifies, collects, preserves, and provides access to a non-circulating collection of records, manuscripts, photos, and other significant resources of enduring historical, legal, administrative, and fiscal value.

Visitors to the Pioneer Room may consult the documents, photographs, maps, and other reference materials available to research a variety of local history topics, including historic homes and properties, biographies on individuals and families local to Escondido, and events pertaining to the history and development of Escondido and the surrounding region.
