Escondido, CA - Escondido Public Library's 2018 Summer Reading Challenge invites children, teens, and adults to "Endless Exploration." The Challenge, which runs from June 9, 2018 to July 28, 2018, includes special events and celebrates reading for all ages. Participants log reading online at http://www.escondidolibrary.org/summer. Anyone can take part in the program from home, on a mobile device, or by using Library computers. Summer readers of all ages earn prizes donated by the Friends of the Library and local businesses.
This year has seen record breaking numbers for the Challenge! At week four, we have 131 babies (ages birth-3), 948 kids (ages 4-11), 244 teens (ages 12-18), and 343 adults enrolled, for a total of 1,666 people! Kids and teens have read over 5,000 hours already and over 3,000 books have been read!
Summer Reading Challenge programs for children, babies, and families include special storytimes, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM)-themed craft events, and Annie Banannie's Big Balloon Adventure.
Teen events include a screen printing t-shirt craft event, a Burritos and Book Club chat discussing books by authors who explored far off worlds or those close to our own, and Esco Sings!, an annual talent show with cash prizes! Adult programs include book discussions, a special summer movie screening of Plan 9 From Outer Space, and Virtual Reality drop in sessions on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
