Upcoming Computer Classes at the Escondido Public Library

The Escondido Public Library will be offering computer classes this April on using online video and podcasting. These classes are part of the LibraryYOU project which is collecting and sharing local knowledge through a new library website:

LibraryYOU is supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian. Its goal is to teach the community about communicating through new media formats and to supplement the library's collection with digital media created by the local community.

Introduction to Online Video
classes will take place Tuesday, April 3 at 2:00 p.m. and Tuesday, April 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the Computer Lab at the Pioneer Room.  Each class will cover the basics of using online video sites like Youtube to share and learn in addition to the cameras and software needed to record and edit videos.

Introduction to Podcasting
classes will take place Tuesday, April 10 at 2:00 p.m. and Tuesday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the Computer Lab at the Pioneer Room. Each class will cover how to find podcasts and download them to your computer or mp3 player as well as how to create podcasts with basic audio editing software.

These classes are free and open to the public. Registration is required. More information and online registration may be found at or by calling 760-839-4828.

Learn to Download Library eBooks

The Escondido Public Library will hold a training session to teach the public how to download free library eBooks to their eReader device. The session will take place on Wednesday, January 18th from 11:00 a.m. until noon in the Turrentine Room. The Escondido Public Library is located in downtown Escondido at 239 South Kalmia Street.

The public is invited to bring in their eReader, such as a Sony Reader, Nook, Kindle, iPad, tablet or smartphone, and learn the basics of downloading library eBooks. All that is required of participants is basic familiarity with the use of their device. Library staff will provide step-by-step instructions for browsing the collection and downloading books from the library’s website

Escondido Public Library offers a wide selection of popular eBook titles, both fiction and non-fiction that can be “checked out” for up to three weeks. Library eBooks are free, can be conveniently accessed 24/7, and expire automatically which means no late fees.

This training is free and open to the public. Registration is not required, but early arrival is recommended. For more information on the library’s eBook downloads, see the eBook webpage or call 760.839.4839.

List of Accomplishments for 2011

None of this could have been achieved without our dedicated staff and the support of our volunteers, friends and partners.  Our supporters include:  the Friends of the Escondido Library;  Friends of Literacy Services; Pioneer Room Friends, Escondido Library Endowment Foundation, the Library Board of Trustees, CalVets, Workforce Partnership, and North County Health Services.

Escondido Library launches eBook downloads

download ebooksEscondido Public Library launched its eBook download program to eagerly awaiting library patrons on Monday, July 18th. Patrons can now browse the library's collection online from the comfort of their own home 24/7. The service is free with a valid library card. Go to the library's eBook web page to download to a computer or a variety of mobile devices such as the I Pad, E-reader or to a smart phone. Amazon Kindle will work with the service as well later this year.

To read eBooks, you will need to download Adobe Digital Editions, free special software which you will also find on the library's website.

With hundreds of popular fiction and non-fiction titles to choose from, the new collection is guaranteed to have something for everyone. You can download best-selling novels, well-known classics, self-improvement guides, and much more. And best of all-titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period. There are no late fees!

One new reader exclaimed "Just managed to download it ALL and I have a book on my phone now! Awesome!"

eBook downloads were made possible by a grant from Serra Libraries. Libraries in San Diego County have organized to use grant money so that we could afford to provide eBooks to our patrons. This could mean you will have to wait a little longer to check out an eBook. The library will be monitoring this and looking for ways to continue improving our eBook offerings and services.

Escondido Library launches new website

The Escondido Public Library’s new website makes it easy for patrons to get information about the library and connect to free, online research tools 24 hours a day. The clean, welcoming design was created with the user in mind. Improved navigation makes finding answers a cinch and users are invited to interact through blogs and the library’s social networking pages.

Patrons can check their account information, discover new titles, and place holds from the comfort of their own homes. Here are a few more ways to use the site:

The redesigned site was created by Technology Services Librarian, Donna Feddern using the mojoPortal content management system and will soon feature downloadable eBooks and eAudiobooks (Summer 2011).
