Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library offers special programming for adults during the month of May. All events are free, open to the public, and held in the Library’s Turrentine Room unless otherwise noted.

Escondido Public Library invites the community to Fight Fake News on Saturday, May 19, 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Fake news is more than a label; it’s a problem that journalists must confront to gain the trust of their audience. Moderator Tom Jones, consumer/investigative producer for NBC 7, will talk with panelists about this growing phenomena and answer audience questions.

2nd Saturday Concert Series: From Beethoven to Broadway. Saturday, May 12, 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

This horn-piano duo will perform the most requested pieces from their 25-year chamber music collaboration, with songs from Beethoven to Mancini.

 

Local Authors Night. Tuesday, May 29, 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

You are invited to participate in a reading night with local authors and learn tips to improve your writing.

Escondido Public Library Celebrates Lunar New Year with Programs for All Ages

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library will celebrate the Lunar New Year with special programs planned during the month of February. All events are free, open to the public, and scheduled to take place in the Library’s Turrentine Room.

  • Panda Express Pawsibilities Reading Program for children ages 4 to 12 starting Thursday, February 1, 2018 to Wednesday, February 28, 2018. Children read five books to earn a free meal! Pick up registration materials at the Children’s Desk.
  • 2nd Saturday Concert Series Presents: Lunar New Year Bohua Youth Group for all ages on Saturday, February 3, 2018 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. An instrumental ensemble comprised of middle grade and high school students whose traditional performances inspire appreciation for Chinese art and culture.
  • Lunar New Year Meditation Storytime for children ages 4-12 years and their families on Thursday, February 8, 2018 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Learn Tai Chi, how to meditate through an interactive story, and create a meditation jar.
  • Stories to Celebrate the Lunar New Year for children ages 6-12 years and their families on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Escondido resident Dr. Virginia Loh-Hagan is an author, presenter, and professor at San Diego State University. In her interactive program, she will read from two of her picture books, Popo’s Lucky Chinese New Year, and Paper Son: Lee’s Journey to America. Children will participate in fun activities that relate to the stories and that celebrate Asian culture and the Lunar New Year.
  • Lunar New Year Celebration: Lion Dancers for all ages on Thursday, February 15, 2018 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Learn about the history and cultural significance of lion dancing as the Legendary Lion Dance Association performs a traditional dance.

Escondido Public Library Announces the 2017-2018 2nd Saturday Concert Series Schedule

 

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library announces the complete season line-up for its popular 2nd Saturday Concert Series, opening December 9th, 2017 and running through June 2018. Except where noted, free musical performances will be held on the second Saturday of each month from 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. in the Library’s Turrentine Room. All ages are welcome.

Fresh from a sabbatical spent studying piano in Vienna, Dr. Byron Chow brings his elegant Trio to the Turrentine Room on December 9th to open the 2nd Saturday Concert Series. Consisting of a violin, clarinet, and piano, the Trio will perform classical pieces and holiday selections. In addition to being the founding member of his Trio, Dr. Chow is also a violist in the La Jolla Symphony.

Cuarteto Carlos Chávez Concert at Escondido Public Library Cancelled

Escondido, CA – The previously announced performance by Mexico City-based Cuarteto Carlos Chávez has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances connected to the recent earthquake in Mexico City.

The 2017-18 season of the Library’s popular 2nd Saturday Concert Series will start on December 9, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. with Byron Chow Trio performing classical music, including holiday-themed selections. The 2nd Saturday Concert Series will run until May 2018. A complete season lineup will be announced shortly at library.econdido.org/concerts.

Escondido Public Library Presents Navy Band Southwest Brass Quintet

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library proudly presents the unique sound of Navy Band Southwest Brass Quintet on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in the Turrentine Room.

This ensemble blends the individual sounds of the trumpet, oboe, trombone, bugelhorn and French horn to create a highly eclectic sonic palette. They bring this unique sound to works from various genres, with an emphasis on popular American composers such as Aaron Copland and Samuel Barber.

Escondido Public Library’s 2nd Saturday Concert Series Presents Pianist Minna Han and Violinist Joo-in Lee

Escondido, CA – Classical virtuosos Minna Han and Joo-in Lee will perform the season finale of the 2nd Saturday Concert Series at Escondido Public Library on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in the Turrentine Room.

Skilled artists Minna Hann and Joo-in Lee have played to enthusiastic audiences across the U.S. and South Korea. Following the May concert, the 2nd Saturday Concert Series will take a hiatus until next fall. Escondido, CA - Escondido Public Library’s 2nd Saturday Concert Series proudly presents Adrienne Nims and Spirit Wind on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in Escondido Library’s Turrentine Room. Adrienne Nims and Spirit Wind play high-energy contemporary and world jazz using Native American, Indian, African and Asian flutes and percussion, as well as more traditional jazz instrumentation. Escondido Public Library’s 2nd Saturday Concert Series Presents Virtual Strangers

Escondido, CA - Virtual Strangers will bring high energy bluegrass to Escondido Public Library’s 2nd Saturday Concert Series, March 11, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in the Turrentine Room. Virtual Strangers will play their award winning music in the tradition of bluegrass legends such as Earl Monroe and Flatt and Scruggs.

Virtual Strangers is a highly talented bluegrass band made up of Mike Tatar, Sr. on banjo; Yvonne Tatar on bass; guitarist Kit Birkett; and Jon Cherry on mandolin. They have played bluegrass festivals throughout the Western United States, and their three-part harmonies and driving beats have earned them top honors in the 4 Corners Band Contest, the Arizona Bluegrass Band contest, and the Southwest Bluegrass Play-offs.

The 2nd Saturday Concert Series runs through May 2017 and features an array of classical, jazz, and other diverse musical styles. On April 8, 2017, the 2nd Saturday Concert Series welcomes Adrienne Nims and the Spirit Wind Trio.

Escondido Public Library’s 2nd Saturday Concert Series Presents Opera Exposed! with Dr. Nicolas Reveles

Escondido, CA - Escondido Public Library will host Opera Exposed!, San Diego Opera’s community engagement program, on, February 11, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in the Turrentine Room. Opera vocalists from local universities will perform selections from famous operas including La Boheme, Romeo and Juliette, and Pirates of Penzance.  

Opera Exposed!  is led by Dr. Nicholas Reveles, the San Diego Opera Company’s Director of Education and Community Engagement. He recruits exceptional undergraduate singers from the University of San Diego, Point Loma Nazarene University, and San Diego State University to perform and promote the joy of opera. Escondido Public Library Presents For the Love of Music, a Violin Concert by and for Kids

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library presents “For the Love of Music,” a violin concert performed by children, ages 7 to 12 years, who are in the California Center for the Arts, Escondido’s (the Center) Jean Will Strings musical program. This special concert is by and for children, however, all ages are welcome to attend. For the Love of Music will be held on Friday, February 10, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. in the Library’s Turrentine Room. Conducted by Kim Stephens-Doll, the children will perform a medley of American classics. Following the performance, attendees will have an opportunity to meet and greet the young musicians.

Named after its benefactor, Jean Will of Escondido, the Jean Will Strings Program at the Center provides children with a violin and free classical music instruction. Sherehe Hollins, the Center’s Education Program Manager, explained, “Children in the Jean Will Strings Program also participate in master classes with internationally renowned musicians, experience live concerts at the Center, and perform on stage throughout the year.” Dan Wood, the Library’s Youth Services Senior Librarian added, “Partnering with the California Center for the Arts, Escondido brings a special violin performance to the community.
