Escondido Public Library Hosts 13th Annual Scrabble-Thon Tournament & Fundraiser 

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library and the Friends of Literacy Services will host the 13th Annual Scrabble-Thon Tournament & Fundraiser on Saturday, March 11, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will be held in the Auditorium of the Park Avenue Community Center, located at 210 Park Ave, Escondido, CA 92025. Doors open for player check-in at 8:30 a.m. and tournament play begins at 9:00 a.m. Players must pre-register by March 6, 2017 online at http://library.escondido.org/scrabblethon, by mail, or in person at the Literacy Services office, located on the 2nd floor of the Library. The registration fee for adults is $25.00; registration for high school students is $15.00.

The Scrabble® tournament consists of five 30-minute games and is open to adults and high school students. Players sign-up to play in one of three divisions: Novice, Intermediate, or Advanced. Participants can compete individually or as a part of a four-player team. Team play requires that all four teammates compete within the same division. Players compete for prizes at the end of each game as well as the final awards for highest individual, team, and high school scores.

Scrabble-Thon raises funds to benefit the Library’s Literacy Services program. Sponsored by the Friends of Literacy Services, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit Library support group, 100% of the proceeds will be used to provide literacy materials and resources. There will be opportunity drawings, a Pick-a-Tile game, and silent auction items throughout Scrabble-Thon. Opportunity drawing tickets will be on sale at the Library prior to March 11th and at the event. Donations are tax-deductible.

Literacy Services Librarian, Lalitha Nataraj, noted, “Scrabble-Thon is a great, intergenerational activity that’s fun and also aids vital literacy efforts in the community. You definitely don’t have to be an expert to play, and we welcome local players from all around Southern California.”

Kalmia Street, Escondido, CA 92025. Doors open for player check-in at 8:00 a.m. Tournament play begins at 9:00 a.m.

The Scrabble® tournament consists of five 30-minute games and is open to adults and high school students. Players sign-up to play in one of three divisions: Novice, Intermediate, or Advanced. High school players compete for a trophy for their school.

Escondido Public Library Hosts Board Game Afternoon for Teens 

Escondido, CA Escondido Public Library introduces Board Game Afternoon, a new weekly program especially for teens and tweens beginning January 16, 2015. Board Game Afternoon takes place in the Library’s Turrentine Room every Friday from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., where teens can engage in friendly competition playing a variety of new and classic board games.

A collection of games is provided for players, such as Apples to Apples, Monopoly, Operation, Cranium, and Scrabble. This is the perfect opportunity for teens to start the weekend and unwind after school. It’s also a great way for high school teens to sharpen their skills to compete in the Library’s annual Scrabble-Thon Tournament which will be held on March 14, 2015. Cathy Janovitz, Teen Librarian, commented, “Board Game Afternoon is a way for high school teens interested in competing in Scrabble-Thon to practice, sharpen their skills and form teams to compete for the coveted trophy for their school.”

Escondido Public Library Hosts 10th Annual Scrabble-Thon Fundraiser 

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library and the Friends of Literacy Services will host the 10th Annual Scrabble-Thon tournament on Saturday, March 1, 2014 from 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM. The event will be held in the Social Hall at the First United Methodist Church of Escondido, located at 341 S. Kalmia Street, Escondido, CA. Doors open for player check-in at 8:00 AM. Tournament play begins at 9:00 AM.

The tournament is open to adults and high school students. Players elect to play in one of three divisions: Advanced, Intermediate, or Novice. Teams of four are encouraged, and teammates must compete within the same division. Pre-registration is required and is now open. The early registration fee for adults is $25.00 and the deadline is February 20, 2014. The registration fee for adults will be $30.00 after that date. The registration fee for high school students is $15.00.
