City of Ashes

by Cassandra Clare
06/05/2013 Categories: action fantasy murder paranormal romance suspense

City of AshesThere's a murderer in New York City. It's not humans that are victims but something much more devastating: a warlock, faerie, vampire, and werewolf. All are 18 years old or younger. Valentine needs these children in order to transform Raziel's Sword into a demonic item. Meanwhile, Jace is kicked out of the Institute by his adopted mom and has gotten on the Clave's Inquistor's bad side. With all this going on, Clary doesn't know what to do. Does she rescue Jace with some help and stop Valentine or fail?

I liked this book because there's a lot of romance and action. This book is so good; you won't want to put it down until you have read the last word. For all you fantasy lovers, you have found the perfect book.

Divergent

by Veronica Roth
05/21/2013 Categories: action dystopia love triangles suspense

DivergentIn Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both.

I loved this book! The plot line was very interesting and captivating. As you continue reading, you fall in love with the characters.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a dystopian novel filled with romance and action. If you loved The Hunger Games and other similar books you will definitely enjoy Divergent.

I Am the Messenger

04/29/2013 Categories: adventure mystery realistic fiction suspense

I am the messengerDeadbeat Ed Kennedy stops a bank robbery in his small town. Afterwards, he gets suspicious playing cards in the mail, instructing him to go to certain people to change their lives forever.

I Am a Messenger is a great book because it shows how anyone can change other people's lives for the better. Ed is likable character that most people can relate to. This author also wrote The Book Thief, which is in my opinion better, but fans won't be disappointed.

I Am the Messenger is still a good book that anyone can enjoy. Read at your own risk, however, since Ed's town has a lot of iffy people that do iffy things.

Lightning Thief

by Rick Riordan
04/25/2013 Categories: action movie mythology suspense

Lightning ThiefPercy Jackson is a troubled boy who finds out that he is the son of the Greek God Poseidon. He then moves to Camp Half-Blood. In the midst of this, he is blamed for stealing another god's weapons, and he sets off on a journey around the world to find it while encountering friends and enemies along the way.

The Lightning Thief is an excellent beginning to the Percy Jackson series. This book definitely shows its research on Greek mythology (it might get a touch out of hand when describing things though), as it gives all of its elements a more modern look to it. The characters are all easy to get attached too (whether you love some or hate some) and the story is quite compelling.

Overall, it's definitely worth a try. This is a must for Greek mythology fans.

Gulliver's Travels

by Jonathan Swift
04/23/2013 Categories: action classic fantasy suspense

Gulliver's TravelsGulliver's Travels is a fantasy book detailing the narration of Lemuel Gulliver. He travels across the sea and discovers interesting and vast countries very different from his own. Gulliver encounters a country where he is a giant, and another featuring a civilization of giants.

The book wasn't that bad. At face level, this story is a fantasy that explores random ideas of a country. There are some parts in the book where the ideas go over one's head, and/or parody something one wouldn't normally know about. One can get the best out of this elderly book once they know the background behind it, but otherwise it's an ok book nonetheless. I recommend this book, not only because it's a classic that everyone has to read, but it's very interesting and has ideas that are uncommon to hear about these days. Like most literary classics, it's a tad difficult to read, but don't let that be an excuse for not reading this classic.

Unspoken

by Sarah Rees Brennam
04/01/2013 Categories: magic paranormal suspense

UnspokenKami has fallen in love with her imaginary friend, a boy who has talked in her head ever since she can remember. Then suddenly, a boy with the same name and personality appears before her. At the same time, brutal animal killings are beginning to surface in her small town, and it's up to Kami and her cohorts to straighten things out.

I liked it! It's like a modern Gothic novel that was both excruciatingly good and sort of disappointing (but I can't tell you why). The characters were well-developed and the surprisingly dark, fantastical story behind the town (Sorry-in-the-Vale) was rather intriguing. I await the sequel with bated breath!

Girls will probably prefer this more due to the romance involved, but due to the surprising twists and turns as well as the darkish flavor of the story, guys may enjoy this book as well. If you get spooked easily, you might want to read this one in the daytime.

The Old Man and the Sea

by Ernest Hemingway
04/01/2013 Categories: action classic suspense

The Old Man and the Sea details an elderly Cuban fisherman's adventure at sea. Almost out of luck, he encounters a marlin of gargantuan proportions and engages a fierce battle with it.

I thought this book was solid, but not the best. It has a simple premise, but this works well with its deep, thoughtful ideas. Its writing is simple, but the words flow very naturally and professionally. It does feel unexciting and drawn-out at times, but mostly it depends on the reader.

I'd recommend The Old Man and the Sea to anyone who wants to read a good classic. It's a short read compared to most books, but it makes quite an impact.

To Kill A Mockingbird

by Harper Lee

To Kill a MOckingbirdTo Kill a Mockingbird is about fictional character named Scout narrating from an adult perspective about something that happened during her childhood. Her story has two main plots: one about she, her brother, and their friend trying to learn more about Boo Radley, a man who has nasty rumors made about him and never leaves his home; and another about the court case in which an African American man named Tom Robinson is convicted for accused rape.

I thought the book was okay overall, because I enjoyed the suspense of the court case, but some other elements of the story seemed bland, or just were not relatable to me in my generation. For example, the scenes with Scout in school did not interest me much, for it had too much detail of a simple elementary school classroom.

I would recommend this book to adults who were around when it was written, since it would relate more to their generation. Also I would relate it to anyone who enjoys exciting court cases, since the court scenes are gripping and exciting.

The Maze Runner

by James Dashner
12/08/2012 Categories: dystopia sci fi survival stories suspense

Maze Runner coverThis book is about a boy named Thomas who wakes up in a mysterious box without any remembrance of the past or even how he got there. There are people peeking through the top calling out to him and eventually they throw down a rope for him to hold on to as they pull him up. It turns out that he is in an immensely large "town" made up of teens. The town is surrounded by giant walls, that somehow open at dawn and close at dusk, and outside the walls are giant mazes. Thomas has to learn how to survive with the other kids, but things start changing once he arrives and no one knows why.

I love this book, it is amazing! By far the best book I have ever read. This book is very thrilling and keeps you hooked in all the way to the end.

I would definitely recommend this book to other people. This book could easily become their favorite book as well and luckily is part of a series, so you won't be left hanging at the end of the first book. If you are into high-action, adventure books that keep you hooked in all the way through you will love this book.
