Escondido Public Library Presents For the Love of Music, a Violin Concert by and for Kids 

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library presents “For the Love of Music,” a violin concert performed by children, ages 7 to 12 years, who are in the California Center for the Arts, Escondido’s (the Center) Jean Will Strings musical program. This special concert is by and for children, however, all ages are welcome to attend. For the Love of Music will be held on Friday, February 10, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. in the Library’s Turrentine Room. Conducted by Kim Stephens-Doll, the children will perform a medley of American classics. Following the performance, attendees will have an opportunity to meet and greet the young musicians.

Named after its benefactor, Jean Will of Escondido, the Jean Will Strings Program at the Center provides children with a violin and free classical music instruction. Sherehe Hollins, the Center’s Education Program Manager, explained, “Children in the Jean Will Strings Program also participate in master classes with internationally renowned musicians, experience live concerts at the Center, and perform on stage throughout the year.” Dan Wood, the Library’s Youth Services Senior Librarian added, “Partnering with the California Center for the Arts, Escondido brings a special violin performance to the community. Escondido Public Library’s Rincón Literario Book Club Meets in January

Escondido, CA - Rincón Literario (The Literary Corner), Escondido Public Library’s Bilingual Book Club will start the New Year with a bang! Explore the nature of power through the mind of a master manipulator in Historia de un canalla/Story of a Sociopath, a psychological thriller by Julia Navarro.  Rincón Literario will meet on January 28, 2017, at 3:30 p.m. in the Turrentine Room. Copies of the book are available for check-out in English and Spanish, and in a variety of formats, including print and eBook. Copies can be reserved at library.escondido.org.

Internationally best-selling Spanish author, Julia Navarro, takes a walk on the dark side with this psychological portrait. Self-avowed sociopath, Thomas Spencer, has led a despicable life – terrorizing his family from an early age, and engaging in blackmail and coercion as an adult. He will stop at nothing to get what he wants, and what he wants is to shatter the happiness of everyone around him.

Rincón Literario’s book discussion is facilitated in both English and Spanish, and both new and returning members are welcome. Rincón Literario will continue on Saturday,February 25, 2017, discussing Uno más uno/One Plus One by Jo Jo Moyes, Rincón Literario is made possible by generous support from Friends of the Escondido Public Library. Escondido Public Library Presents New Year, New Finances!

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library, in collaboration with Operation Hope in Escondido, will host a credit and money management workshop on Tuesday, January 24, 2016 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM in the Library’s Turrentine Room.

Learn the basics of creating a budget, how to understand your credit report and what you can do to correct errors that may negatively affect your credit rating, and establish or rebuild your credit profile. The workshop also covers your rights as a consumer and helps you understand how to make the most of them. Operation Hope in Escondido is an organization committed to expanding economic opportunity through education and empowerment. Feldenkrais® - Discover Natural Pain Relief at Escondido Public Library

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library offers Feldenkrais® - Discover Natural Pain Relief, a series of two consecutive programs held on Fridays, January 6, 2017 and January 13, 2017, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., in the Turrentine Room. The classes are part of the Library’s New Year, New You 2017 theme. While classes are free, pre-registration is required. To register, visit http://library.escondido.org/register. Participants should bring a mat, towel, or blanket.

Feldenkrais® is a method of gentle movements done while ying down, standing, or sitting, and designed to give the body new options for movement. After a Feldenkrais® lesson, participants may feel taller, lighter, breathe more easily, and begin to feel a sense of grace and elegance in movements. Feldenkrais® - Discover Natural Pain Relief classes are led by Anita Noone, Guild Certified Feldenkrais® Practitioner and are presented in collaboration with Escondido Recreation.

Escondido Public Library’s 2nd Tuesday Book Club Discusses The Diver’s Clothes Lie Empty by Vida Vendela

Escondido, CA - Escondido Public Library invites readers to join the 2nd Tuesday Book Club meeting on January 10, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. in the Turrentine Room. This month’s selection is The Diver’s Clothes Lie Empty by Vida Vendela. Copies of the book are available for check out and may be reserved in the Library catalog at library.escondido.org.

What remains when you are stripped of your name, possessions, family and country? Where does the truth of a person lie, and once lost, can it be relocated? The 2nd Tuesday Book Club will discuss The Diver’s Clothes Lie Empty, and how this psychological thriller, told with wicked humor, explores the facets of identity, past, present, and future.

2nd Tuesday Book Club will continue on February 14, 2016 for a group discussion of As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner.

Escondido Public Celebrates the Holidays with the San Diego Chamber Music Society Brass Quartet

Escondido, CA – The San Diego Chamber Music Society Brass Quartet will perform holiday music at Escondido Public Library’s 2nd Saturday Concert on December 10, 2016 at 3:00 PM in the Turrentine Room. To celebrate the season, the program will feature traditional carols and favorites, such as “Let it Snow”, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”, and “Winter Wonderland.” The quartet is comprised of two trumpets, a French horn and a trombone, featuring members who are also associated with the La Jolla Symphony Orchestra, Cabrillo Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra of Baja California.

The 2nd Saturday Concert Series runs through May 2016 with a line-up of diverse musical styles from classical to jazz. The January 14, 2017 concert presents the Peter Sprague Trio, performing Brazilian-style jazz combined with American pop and jazz for a unique and exciting sound. Escondido Public Library’s 2nd Tuesday Book Club Discusses Being Mortal: Medicine and What Happens in the End by Atul Gawande

This month’s selection is the Being Mortal: Medicine and What Happens in the End by Atul Gawande. Drawing from his own experience as a prominent surgeon, Harvard medical professor and best-selling author Atul Gawande explores aging and death in modern American medicine. Having assisted many terminally ill patients and their families, Gawande asks: At what cost do we value prolonging quantity of life over quality of the remaining time? Gawande uses both storytelling and research to explore these ideas, and book club attendees will have much to discuss.

Escondido, CA - Escondido Public Library will host Broke A$$ Holidays - a fun, creative craft experience for adults looking to create unique gifts this holiday season. The program will take place on Saturday, December 3, 2016 from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the Turrentine Room. Participants upcycle used books to create free, sustainable gifts for those on their holiday short list. Craft supplies, good cheer, and holiday tunes will be provided. Supplies are limited and registration is required at library.escondido.org/register by December 2, 2016.

Broke A$$ Holidays is a free craft program open to all adults who are full of gift-giving spirit, but low on cash.
