Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

This novel is about girl named Lily who is about 80 years old at the start of the book. She then recalls her childhood of moments where she went through foot binding, deaths within her family, hardships, romance, and her bound relationship with her laotong, Snow Flower.

The novel is heartbreaking and shows the bonds of her close friend, Snow Flower. It really touches the heart and at times makes you want to cry. Very well written and even shows the history side of foot binding in 18th century China.

If you love touching stories that hit you in all emotions, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See is the book for you. You even begin to relate to the characters on an emotional level. As well as a feel for poetry.

The Joy Luck Club

Joy Luck ClubFour Chinese mothers start the "Joy Luck Club" where they meet to play mahjong, eat and talk.  Each woman has a Chinese American daughter counterpart they struggle to connect with while also dealing with their painful memories in China. Each woman has a story, some sad, others heart-wrenching and all deal with their struggles to bridge the gap between Chinese and American culture and the relationships between the mothers and daughters.

I liked how the author tied all the stories together into one coheisive whole and used the lives of 7 women to tell the story of all immigrant families. Each vignette is powerful and meaningful while also relating to the novel's meaning as a whole.

I would recommend it because it provides a new perspective on the difficulties of communicating between two very different cultures and really gets into the minds of each narrator instead of letting them be just vessels for the author's story.

Snow Flower coverThis book takes place in China in the 19th century.  A girl, Lily, is force to have her feet bound after seeing her younger sister die of foot-binding. Lily is then introduced to her matchmaker who tells her of her Laotong, or long life friend. Lily and Snow Flower come from two completely different worlds yet still hold a strong bond.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is an incredible book that has a fairy tale in real life. However, in this book, Lily and Snow Flower must endure many obstacles before they find their true happy ending. Nevertheless, Not everybody or book has a happy ending
and life has many twists.

I greatly recommend this book to people who like sharp twists in books and shocking endings. This book does contain intense scenes and may not be suitable for young teens. This book is a must- read from Lisa See. If you are interested in China's history or even if you aren't, you will be after you read Snow Flower and the Secret Fan.
