Escondido, CA - Escondido Public Library invites readers to join the 2nd Tuesday Book Club meeting on January 10, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. in the Turrentine Room. This month’s selection is The Diver’s Clothes Lie Empty by Vida Vendela. Copies of the book are available for check out and may be reserved in the Library catalog at library.escondido.org.

What remains when you are stripped of your name, possessions, family and country? Where does the truth of a person lie, and once lost, can it be relocated? The 2nd Tuesday Book Club will discuss The Diver’s Clothes Lie Empty, and how this psychological thriller, told with wicked humor, explores the facets of identity, past, present, and future.

2nd Tuesday Book Club will continue on February 14, 2016 for a group discussion of As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner.

Escondido, CA – Escondido Writers Group meets at the Escondido Public Library on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. in the Turrentine Room. Writers of all genres are invited to join the Escondido Writers Group for an opportunity to improve their writing by participating in monthly readings and group critiques. Meet other writers and published authors and learn from each other in a supportive environment. Participants are encouraged to bring samples of their current writing projects to share and receive constructive feedback. Winter and Spring Storytime Programs at Escondido Public Library

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library offers a variety of storytime programs this winter and spring designed for babies, toddlers, and pre-kindergarten children. Storytime programs are filled with songs, fingerplays, flannel board presentations, puppets and, of course, stories just right for the development of young minds. Library staff are happy to help families find books to check out after program.

Escondido Public Library’s 2017 Winter and Spring Storytime Schedule begins January 5, 2017 and runs through May 15, 2017 and includes:

  • Rhymes and Reading on Mondays at 11:00 a.m. for children ages 3-5;
  • Toddler Tales, a bilingual program, on Thursdays in January and March at 10:30 a.m. for toddlers who are walking and up to 3 years-old;
  • Baby Lapsit on Thursdays in February and April at 10:30 a.m. for newborn babies to pre-walkers.

Note: Rhymes and Reading will not meet on April 17 and 24, 2017. 

Escondido Public Library’s storytime programs address the development of early literacy skills that are important in preparing children for school. Each storytime program is planned and presented around the idea that parents are their child’s first and most important teacher. Storytimes facilitate bonding between parents and young children and provide a positive experience with books and play that leads to a life-long love of reading and learning.

Escondido Public Library’s 2nd Saturday Concert Series Presents The Peter Sprague Trio

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library’s 2nd Saturday Concert Series welcomes the New Year with the Peter Sprague Trio performing Brazilian-style jazz on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in the Turrentine Room. The trio features virtuoso guitarist Peter Sprague, singer and percussionist Leonard Patton, and accomplished saxophonist Tripp Sprague. Influenced by Latin jazz pioneers such as Chick Corea and Sergio Mendes, the group has combined their deep love of Brazilian music, American pop, and jazz to create a sound and style uniquely their own.

The February 11, 2017 concert will present the return of San Diego Opera’s “Opera Exposed!” with Dr. Nicholas Reveles and a talented group of soloists. Escondido Public Library’s Holiday Food for Fines Program Begins

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library’s annual Holiday Food for Fines Program runs Monday, November 28 through Saturday, December 31, 2016. The program provides Library patrons with the opportunity to clear up to $20.00 in fines from their account. Proceeds benefit Interfaith Community Services in Escondido which distributes the food to families in need throughout the North County area.

Non-perishable, nutritious, pre-packaged items such as canned goods, pasta, sauces, and peanut butter credit up to $1.00 worth of fines per item. Non-nutritious, perishable, expired, or damaged items cannot be accepted. Customer Services Supervisor, Linda Weber, explains, “This event is a wonderful way for Library patrons to not only clear some of their fines, but to also give back to their community by helping those in need. Last year we collected more than 50 crates of food weighing an estimated 1,500 pounds. We hope to top that this year.”

Food may only be used to clear fines, and may not be used to clear fees associated with lost or damaged books and materials, or City Attorney fees.

The Library is happy to accept any donations whether or not they are fine-related and welcomes donations from patrons who bring in food just to help those in need. Escondido Public Celebrates the Holidays with the San Diego Chamber Music Society Brass Quartet

Escondido, CA – The San Diego Chamber Music Society Brass Quartet will perform holiday music at Escondido Public Library’s 2nd Saturday Concert on December 10, 2016 at 3:00 PM in the Turrentine Room. To celebrate the season, the program will feature traditional carols and favorites, such as “Let it Snow”, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”, and “Winter Wonderland.” The quartet is comprised of two trumpets, a French horn and a trombone, featuring members who are also associated with the La Jolla Symphony Orchestra, Cabrillo Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra of Baja California.

The 2nd Saturday Concert Series runs through May 2016 with a line-up of diverse musical styles from classical to jazz. The January 14, 2017 concert presents the Peter Sprague Trio, performing Brazilian-style jazz combined with American pop and jazz for a unique and exciting sound. This month’s selection is the Being Mortal: Medicine and What Happens in the End by Atul Gawande. Copies of the book are available for check out and may be reserved in the Library catalog at library.escondido.org.

Drawing from his own experience as a prominent surgeon, Harvard medical professor and best-selling author Atul Gawande explores aging and death in modern American medicine. Having assisted many terminally ill patients and their families, Gawande asks: At what cost do we value prolonging quantity of life over quality of the remaining time? Gawande uses both storytelling and research to explore these ideas, and book club attendees will have much to discuss.

Escondido Public Library Hosts Annual Children’s Holiday Tree Trimming Party

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library will host its Children’s Holiday Tree Trimming Party  on Thursday, December 1, 2016, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. in the Turrentine Room. Children celebrate this annual event by making an ornament for the Children’s Room holiday tree and one to take home. This festive event also celebrates the holiday spirit with a special visit from Santa Claus. Families are encouraged to arrive early, as supplies may be limited.
