Escondido Public Library Hosts 15th Annual Scrabble-Thon Tournament & Fundraiser

Escondido, CA - Escondido Public Library and the Friends of Literacy Services will host the 15th Annual Scrabble-Thon Tournament & Fundraiser on Saturday, March 9, 2019 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will be held in the Auditorium of the Park Avenue Community Center, located at 210 Park Ave, Escondido, CA 92025. Doors open for player check-in at 8:00 a.m. and tournament play begins at 9:00 a.m. Players must pre-register by March 5, 2019 online at escondidolibrary.org/scrabblethon, by mail, or in person at the Literacy Services office, located on the 2nd floor of the Library. The registration fee for adults is $25.00; registration for high school students is $15.00.

 

The Scrabble® tournament consists of five 30-minute games and is open to adults and high school students. Players sign-up to play in one of three divisions: Novice, Intermediate, or Advanced. Participants can compete individually or as a part of a four-player team. Team play requires that all four teammates compete within the same division. Players compete for prizes at the end of each game as well as the final awards for highest individual and team scores.

 

Scrabble-Thon raises funds to benefit the Library's Literacy Services program. Sponsored by the Friends of Literacy Services, 100% of the proceeds will be used to provide literacy materials and resources. There will be opportunity drawings, a Pick-a-Tile game, and silent auction items throughout Scrabble-Thon. Donations are tax-deductible.

Escondido Public Library's Holiday Food for Fines Benefits Locals in Need

Escondido, CA - Escondido Public Library's annual Holiday Food for Fines event was a community success. This popular program provided Library patrons with the opportunity to clear up to $20.00 in fines from their account through food donations. The collection drive ran from November 26 through December 31, 2018, and the Library accumulated 56 crates of food weighing 1,680 pounds. Proceeds from the drive were donated to Interfaith Community Services in Escondido which distributed the food to families in need throughout the North County area (www.interfaithservices.org/).

Escondido Public Library Kick Starts 2019 with Community-Wide Wellness Fair

Escondido, CA - Escondido Public Library will host the first-ever Wellness Fair. This all-ages event is free and will be held on Saturday, January 26, from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. in the Turrentine Room. More than twenty Escondido businesses are partnering with the Library to share their resources to help start the New Year with good health.

Participating partners include IHOT, St. Paul's Pace, AMCR Institute Inc., Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, Interfaith Community Services, Neighborhood HealthCare, Seniors Helping Seniors, Southern Caregiver Resource Center, United Healthcare community plan, San Diego Children's Discovery Museum, and more!

Escondido Public Library Hosts Winter-Spring 2019 Events for Families

Escondido, CA - Escondido Public Library offers special programming for children and their families in the month of January. All events are free and open to the public.

  • Weekly Baby Storytimes at SDCDM for pre-walkers-3 years old and their families. Every Monday starting January 7, 2019 from 10 a.m. - 10:30 a.m., children and their families can attend Baby Storytime at the San Diego Children's Discovery Museum. The Museum is located at 320 North Broadway. Storytime runs from January 7, 2019 to May 20, 2019.
  • Stem Exploration Hour for children ages 6-12 and their families on Thursday, January 17, 2019 from 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. in the Library's Turrentine Room. Explore hydraulics, wind power, coding, and engineering at various activity stations. The library's 3D printer, Silhouette Cameo printer, and raspberry Pi's will be on display.
  • Inclusive Art Club for all ages on the first and third Fridays of the month in the Library's Turrentine Room. On select Fridays, starting January 4, 2019 from 4 p.m. - 5 p.m., children and their families can enjoy stories and create art from favorite picture books. The program runs from January 4, 2019 to April 19, 2019.

Get into the Holiday Spirit- Donate food to remove Library fines!

Escondido, CA - Escondido Public Library's annual Holiday Food for Fines Program runs Monday, November 26, through Monday, December 31, 2018. The program provides Library patrons with the opportunity to clear up to $20.00 in fines from their account. Proceeds benefit Interfaith Community Services in Escondido which distributes the food to families in need throughout the North County area.

Non-perishable, nutritious, pre-packaged items such as canned goods, pasta, sauces, and peanut butter equal $1.00 worth of fines per item. Non-nutritious, perishable, expired, or damaged items cannot be accepted. Customer Services Supervisor, Linda Weber, explains, "This event is a wonderful way for Library patrons to not only clear some of their fines, but to also give back to their community by helping those in need. Last year we collected 53 crates of food weighing an estimated 1,590 pounds. We hope to top that this year."

Food may only be used to clear fines, and may not be used to clear fees associated with lost or damaged books and materials, or City Attorney fees.

Escondido Public Library Launches 1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Escondido, CA – Learning to read is an early indicator of academic success. Even before school begins, kids get critical literacy skills from parents and caregivers. Reading, discussing books, and singing out loud contribute to a child’s language development skills. 1000 Books Before Kindergarten is intended for parents with children ages birth to 5 years old. Kickoff events will be held during Baby Lapsit storytime on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., as well as during the Toddler Tales storytime on Thursday, September 6, 2018 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Turrentine Room. Escondido Public Library Invites You to Endless Exploration, 2018 Summer Reading Challenge for All-Ages!

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library’s 2018 Summer Reading Challenge invites children, teens, and adults to “Endless Exploration.” The Challenge, which runs from June 9, 2018 to July 28, 2018, includes special events and celebrates reading for all ages. Participants log reading online at http://www.escondidolibrary.org/summer. Anyone can take part in the program from home, on a mobile device, or by using Library computers. Summer readers of all ages earn prizes donated by the Friends of the Library and local businesses.

This year has seen record breaking numbers for the Challenge! At week four, we have 131 babies (ages birth-3), 948 kids (ages 4-11), 244 teens (ages 12-18), and 343 adults enrolled, for a total of 1,666 people! Kids and teens have read over 5,000 hours already and over 3,000 books have been read!

Summer Reading Challenge programs for children, babies, and families include special storytimes, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM)-themed craft events, and Annie Banannie’s Big Balloon Adventure.

Teen events include a screen printing t-shirt craft event, a Burritos and Book Club chat discussing books by authors who explored far off worlds or those close to our own, and Esco Sings!, an annual talent show with cash prizes! Adult programs include book discussions, a special summer movie screening of Plan 9 From Outer Space, and Virtual Reality drop in sessions on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

A Highlight of June Events at Escondido Public Library

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library offers special events for adults during the month of June. All events are free, open to the public, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, and held in the Library’s Turrentine Room unless otherwise noted. 

  • Death Café North County on Saturday, June 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Death Café provides a safe and agenda-free place to discuss death, dying, and end of life concerns, over coffee, tea, and tasty treats. Registration is encouraged at www.escondidolibrary.org/register
  • Summer Reading Challenge All-Ages Kickoff —Outside Portico. Saturday, June 9 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Register for the Challenge and receive free samples from Chick-Fil-A and Baltimore Snowball. Participants who complete the Summer Reading Challenge earn chances to win gift cards and the grand prize, a Kindle Fire!
  • Escondido Writers Group Open Mic on Saturday, June 16 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Writers of all genres are invited to participate in this special open mic event. Read your work to the audience and receive friendly critiques. Please arrive by 10:00 a.m. to secure a spot.

Free Dads & Donuts All-Ages Event at Escondido Public Library!

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library will host the first ever Dads & Donuts on Saturday, May 5, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. This interactive, all-ages event includes free giveaways and will celebrate Free Comic Book Day, Star Wars culture, and promote family bonding.

Dads (and male caregivers), bring your kids to the library to mingle with fellow dads, enjoy free donuts and coffee, pick out a free comic book (while supplies last), play a virtual reality game, and watch a 3D printer demonstration. Kids may come dressed as Star Wars characters and be entertained with educational, age appropriate activities.

This program is sponsored by Friends of the Escondido Public Library. Library programs are free and open to the public.
