Grand Avenue General constrcution details

The Grand Avenue Vision Project is all about preserving Escondido’s historic small-town look and feel while infusing new energy and vibrancy into the heart of Escondido. This exciting initiative aims to transform Grand Avenue into a welcoming and pedestrian-friendly corridor and boost the economic vitality of our downtown area. 

The Grand Avenue Vision Plan was intended to be constructed in phases as funding became available. The City receives $1.2 million in American Rescue funding for design and construction of Phase II. Construction of Phase II began on September 30, 2024, and is being completed in three subphases to minimize disruptions. Construction is currently on subphase 1: Juniper to Kalmia.

  • Subphase 1: Juniper to Kalmia: September 30, 2024 – December 2024 
  • Subphase 2: Kalmia to Broadway: November 13, 2024 – December 2024 
  • Subphase 3: Broadway to Maple: January 2025 – Spring 2025 

Construction Hours and Details 

Construction will take place Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. During construction of Phase II, Grand Avenue will be closed to through traffic. However, pedestrian access to all businesses will remain open.

Construction updates

The first full week of November will include paving of Grand and beginning sidewalk paving. Access to businesses will remain throughout sidewalk paving. 

Wednesday, November 13, the Contractor Nationwide will begin moving into subphase 2. Subphase 2 is from Kalmia to Broadway.  During construction of subphase 2 Grand Avenue will be closed to through traffic from Juniper to Broadway.  

All businesses with outdoor dining should remove any items they wish to keep, this includes but is not limited to lighting, tables, chairs, covers, shades, etc. The contractor will remove the railing on the sidewalk, which will be recycled. New railings will be placed during construction.
