Americanah, by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, is a 2013 National Book Critics Circle Fiction award winner and was listed in the 10 Best Books of 2013 by the editors of the New York Times Book Review. This is the story of two young Nigerians, Ifemelu and Obinze, who are separated after falling in love. Determined to leave a nation torn apart by military dictatorship, Ifemelu leaves Lagos to study in at an American university. Obinze, unable to secure a visa to the United States in the aftermath of 9/11, instead struggles as an undocumented immigrant in London. In the United States, Ifemilu faces what it means to be black in another culture for the first time. Will Ifemelu return to her mother land, where only the land awaits her? Or will she stay and overcome race issues, as well as find love, courage, and her own identity in America? Obinze travels another path, returning to Nigeria years later when the country becomes democratic. Find out how Obinze and Ifemelu reunite and make tough decisions, remembering their youthful love.

Rincón Literario will meet next month on Saturday, October 22, 2016, to discuss Waiting for Snow in Havana: Confessions of a Cuban Boy, by Carlos Eire, the selected title for 2016 KPBS One Book, One San Diego. To learn more about One Book, One San Diego, go to 2016 KPBS One Book One San Diego
