Bilingual Book Discussion Group Meets at Escondido Public Library

Escondido, CA - Rincón Literario (The Literary Corner), Escondido Public Library’s bilingual book discussion group, will meet on Saturday, May 31, from 3:30 – 4:45 PM in the Library’s Board Room. Author and journalist, Miriam Ruvinskis, will lead the discussion in both English and Spanish.  El castillo de cristal / The Glass Castle by Jeannette Wallsis the selected book for May.

Rex and Rose Mary Walls and their four children lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns or camping in the mountains.  When sober, Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who captured his children’s imagination and taught them how to embrace life fearlessly.  Rose Mary painted and wrote but couldn’t bear the responsibility of a family.

When their money ran out, the Walls returned to the dismal West Virginia mining town and family that Rex Wall had done everything he could to escape.  As the dysfunction of her family escalated, Jeannette and the other Wall children had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents’ repeated betrayals. Until, finally, Jeannette found the resources and will to leave home. Hers is a story of triumph against all odds. Yet, it’s also a tender tale of unconditional love in a family that, despite its profound flaws, gave her the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms.

Araceli Capilla, a long-time Rincón Literario (The Literary Corner) member commented, “I have had the enjoyable experience of reading a great diversity of writers from different cultural backgrounds. In addition, Miriam Ruvinsky, the discussion facilitator, always provides thorough background information about both the author and subject matter to further enrich our discussions. This is a great way to discover new authors and improve your bilingual communication skills.”

Rincón Literario meets regularly on the last Saturday of the month to explore literature published in English and Spanish. In June, readers will discuss La llave de Sarah / Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay.

Rincón Literario is made possible by generous support from the Friends of the Escondido Public Library. This program is free and open to the public.
