Escondido, CA - Rincón Literario (The Literary Corner), Escondido Public Library’s bilingual book discussion group, will meet on Saturday, June 28, from 3:30 – 4:45 PM in the Library’s Board Room. Author and journalist, Miriam Ruvinskis, will lead the discussion in both English and Spanish.  La llave de Sarah / Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay is the selected book for June.

The setting is Paris, July 1942.  Ten-year-old Sarah and her family are brutally arrested by the French police in the Vel’ d’Hiv’ roundup. She just has time to lock her younger brother in a cupboard in the family’s apartment, thinking she will be back within a few hours.  In the summer of 1942, the French police arrested thousands of Jewish families and held them outside of Paris before shipping them to Auschwitz.

Fast forward to Paris, May 2002, it is the 60th anniversary of the Vel’ d’Hiv’ roundup, a black day In France’s past.  Julie, an American journalist, stumbles onto a trail of long-hidden family secrets that connect her to Sarah. She is compelled to retrace Sarah’s ordeal to discover what happened to Sarah, the only member of her family to survive.  The author offers a brilliantly subtle, compelling portrait of France under occupation and reveals the taboos and silence that surround this painful episode.

Miriam Ruvinskis, Rincón Literario’s facilitator states, “Book discussions are a perfect way of nostalgically revisiting Latino culture and language while also making new friends and opening windows and paths to future experiences and other cultures.”

Rincón Literario meets regularly on the last Saturday of the month to explore literature published in English and Spanish. On July 26, from 3:30 – 4:45 PM, readers will discuss Una boda en Haiti / Wedding in Haiti  by Julia Alvarez.

Rincón Literario is made possible by generous support from the Friends of the Escondido Public Library. This program is free and open to the public.
