Escondido, CA - Rincón Literario (The Literary Corner), Escondido Public Library’s Bilingual Book Discussion Group, will meet on Saturday, March 28, 2015, from 3:30 – 4:45 p.m. in the Library’s Turrentine Room. En el tiempo de las mariposas / In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez, is the selected book for March. Participants will discuss books bilingually, in English and Spanish, enabling them to enjoy great literature in either language. Rincón Literario also provides an opportunity to practice either English or Spanish language skills.
It is November 23, 1960, and the bodies of three beautiful, convent-educated sisters have been found near their wrecked Jeep at the bottom of a 150-foot cliff on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. The local newspaper reports their deaths as an accident. It does not mention that a fourth sister lives. Nor does it explain that the sisters were among the leading opponents of General Raphael Leonidas Trujillo’s dictatorship. It doesn’t have to, everyone knows of Las Mariposas – “The Butterflies.”
Now, three decades later, Julia Alvarez immerses us in a tangled and dangerous moment in Caribbean history to tell their story in a brilliantly characterized novel, through the voices of all four sisters. The Butterflies were extraordinary women. Through the art and the magic of Julia Alvarez’s imagination, the martyred Butterflies live again in this novel of courage and love, and the human cost of political oppression.
Rincón Literario meets regularly on the last Saturday of the month to explore literature published in English and Spanish. In April, readers will discuss the classis work, Cien anos de soledad / One Hundred Years of Solitude, by Gabriel García Márquez.
Rincón Literario is made possible by generous support from Friends of the Escondido Public Library. This program is free and open to the public.
