Bilingual Book Discussion Group Meets at Escondido Library

Escondido, CA - Rincón Literario (The Literary Corner), Escondido Public Library’s bilingual book discussion group, will meet on Saturday, November 30th, from 3:30 – 4:45 PM in the Library’s Board Room. Author and journalist, Miriam Ruvinskis, will lead the discussion in both English and Spanish.  El cuaderno de Maya / Maya’s Notebook by Isabel Allende is the selected book for November.

This contemporary, coming-of-age story centers upon Maya Vidal, a remarkable teenager abandoned by her parents, who grows up in a rambling old house in Berkeley with her grandparents.  Her grandmother, Nini, is a force of nature – willful and outspoken, unconventionally wise, and fiercely protective – a woman whose formidable strength helped her build a new life after emigrating from Chile in 1973.  Popo, Maya’s grandfather, is an African-American astronomer and professor, a gentle, loving man who is Maya’s guiding light.  After the death of her beloved grandfather, Maya, along with a circle of girlfriends known as “the vampires,” turns to drugs, alcohol, and petty crime in a downward spiral that eventually leads to Las Vegas and a dangerous underworld.  She becomes trapped in a war between assassins, the police, the FBI, and Interpol.  Her one chance for survival is Nini, who helps her escape to a remote island off the coast of Chile.  In the care of her grandmother’s old friend, Manuel Arias, Maya begins to record her story in her notebook, as she tries to make sense of her past and unravel the mysteries of her family and her own life.

Adult Services Librarian Paul Crouthamel states, “When you discuss a great book with others who have read it, you can share your perspectives and learn how other people might interpret the story differently.  The discussions are a perfect way to learn about interesting books and converse in both languages.”

Rincón Literario meets regularly on the last Saturday of the month with the exception of the month of December.  The book group will meet again on January 25, 2014, when readers will discuss the classic novel Las uvas de la ira / The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.

Rincón Literario is made possible by generous support from the Friends of the Escondido Public Library. This program is free and open to the public.
