Escondido Public Library’s bilingual book discussion group, Rincón Literario (The Literary Corner) meets on Saturday, January 26th from 3:30 – 4:45 PM in the library’s Board Room. The Escondido Public Library is located in downtown Escondido at 239 South Kalmia Street.

Rincón Literario meets regularly, the last Saturday of each month, to explore literature published in English and Spanish. The discussions are a perfect way to discuss interesting books and converse in both languages.

The selected book is the inspirational memoir Deshonrada / In the Name of Honor by Mukhtar Mai.  In June 2002, Mukhtar Mai, a Pakistani woman from the impoverished village of Meerwala, was condemned by her village tribal council to be gang raped by a local clan known as the Mastoi – punishment for indiscretions allegedly committed by the woman’s 12 year old brother.  While certainly not the first account of a female’s body being negotiated for honor in a family, this time the survivor had bravely chosen to fight back.  She asserted humanity for herself and other women by suing the council before the supreme court of Pakistan and winning.

By July 2002, the Pakistani government awarded her the equivalent of $8500 in U.S. dollars and sentenced her attackers to death.  Mukhtar Mai went on to use the funds to open a school for girls so future generations would not suffer, as she had, from illiteracy. In this rousing account, Mai describes her experience and how she has since become an agent for change and  a beacon of hope for oppressed women around the world.

In February Rincon Literario readers will discuss Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. A list of future Rincón Literario selections is available on our website. For more information on the library’s book discussion groups and other programs, visit the library website or call 760.839.4601.

Rincón Literario is made possible by generous support from the Friends of the Escondido Public Library. This program is free and open to the public.
