Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library’s R.E.A.D. (Read, Eat, and Discuss) Middle Grade Book Club for children, ages 9-12, meets on Friday, April 4, 2014, in the Turrentine Room from 3:30 – 4:30 PM. Kim Baker’s Pickle will be discussed, followed by an interactive Skype visit with the author. Participants will have a firsthand opportunity to ask the author questions about the book. A number of copies of Pickle will be available for checkout at the Children’s Desk one month before the meeting.

In this humorous novel, Baker captures the zany antics of Ben Diaz, a sixth-grader with a gift for pranking. Hoping to make new friends, Ben forms the League of Pickle Makers, a secret invite-only school club for fellow pranksters. There’s an immediate problem: he can’t include his best friend, Hector, whose grandmother is the school principal. Ben’s activities jeopardize his friendship with Hector, and it is a matter of time before the Pickle Makers are caught. Pickle will find an eager audience of readers among devoted fans of Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.

Youth Services Librarian, Lalitha Nataraj said, “At the February R.E.A.D. Book Club meeting, kids kept asking, ‘When is the next meeting?’ It’s wonderful to see children excited about reading and discussing a book. Given the fantastic insights shared last time, I cannot wait to have the children interact directly with Ms. Baker through Skype – It will be a real treat for all of us.”

The next R.E.A.D. Middle Grade Book Club meeting will be on Friday, May 30, 2014, from 3:30-4:30 PM in the Turrentine Room. Readers will discuss The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate.
