Escondido Public Library’s R.E.A.D. Book Club Discusses Newbery Award-winner The One and Only Ivan

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library’s R.E.A.D. (Read, Eat, and Discuss) Middle Grade Book Club for children, ages 9-12, meets on Friday, May 30, 2014, in the Turrentine Room from 3:30 – 4:30 PM. Katherine Applegate’s award-winning The One and Only Ivan will be discussed, followed by a craft activity. A limited number of copies of the bookare available for checkout at the Children’s Desk and books can be reserved by accessing the catalog on the Library’s website.

Winner of the 2013 Newbery Award Medal and a New York Times bestseller,Applegate’s novel is a story told from the perspective of a captive gorilla named Ivan, who has spent much of his life in a glass enclosure of a shopping mall.  For 27 years, Ivan has grown used to humans watching him and rarely reflects on his previous life in the jungle. When he encounters Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, Ivan’s life dramatically changes. Fans of classics such as Charlotte’s Web and A Cricket in Times Square will especially find The One and Only Ivan to be a satisfying read.

Senior Librarian for Youth Services, Cindi Bouvier commented, “We have had such a fantastic reception for the R.E.A.D book club. Our April Skype session with author Kim Baker brought many fascinating questions from eager readers; afterwards, children shared how personally meaningful it was to directly interact with a real-life writer!”

This is the last R.E.A.D. Middle Grade Book Club meeting for the spring. Look for the program to resume in Fall 2014 by checking the Library’s website.
