Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library’s Read, Eat, and Discuss (R.E.A.D.) Middle Grade Book Club for children, ages 9-12, will meet on Friday, October 14, 2016, in the Turrentine Room from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. Participants will explore Ghosts, the new graphic novel from Raina Telgemeier, award-winning author of Smile, Drama, and Sisters. Registration is required and now open. Participants can sign up online at library.escondido.org/register. Copies of Ghosts can be obtained at the Youth Services desk, while supplies last. To reserve a copy, visit the Library’s catalog at library.escondido.org.
Once again, drawing on her gift for mining the humorous and heartfelt emotions of familial relationships, Telgemeier weaves the story of Cat and little sister Maya, who move with their family to the town of Bahía de la Luna on the northern California coast. Maya has cystic fibrosis, and can benefit from the climate’s cool, salty air. Though Cat cares deeply for her sister, she is less than thrilled to leave behind friends, and even less so when she discovers the little town’s enthusiasm for its ghostly Inhabitants.
As the days draw nearer to the annual Día de los Muertos celebration, Cat must overcome her fears for Maya’s sake. With a light yet deeply moving touch, Telgemeier artfully illustrates in words and pictures the sisters’ personality differences, their mutual affection, and what it means to truly live and love in the face of uncertainty.
