Completing at least 7 out of 10 activities earns a free book. The Baby Summer Reading Club fosters the six early literacy skills necessary to prepare children for reading and writing:

  • Getting your child interested in books. (Print Motivation)
  • Sounding out words. (Phonological Awareness)
  • Understanding the meaning of words and/or the story. (Vocabulary Skills)
  • Developing the ability to share the details and/or ideas of a book. (Narrative Skills)
  • Distinguishing between letters and pictures. (Print Awareness)
  • Learning letters and their sounds. (Letter Knowledge)

Children’s Librarian, Lalitha Nataraj reflected on the importance of reading to babies and sharing stories, “It’s never too early to begin reading to your baby, especially since the brain develops at an incredibly rapid rate during the first three years of life. Sharing books with your child helps them build vital language skills and strengthens memory.  Developing reading abilities at an early age plays a significant role in boosting academic performance in later years. Joining the Library’s Reading is So Delicious Baby Summer Reading Club is a great way to bond with your baby and get them on the path to reading success.”
