Escondido, CA Escondido Public Library’s Burritos & Book Club for teens, ages 13 to 18, meets on Saturday, May 7, 2016, in the Turrentine Room from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. A Girl Called Fearless, by Catherine Linka, is the selected title and copies are available for checkout at the Library’s Information Desk or can be reserved using the Library’s online catalog at library.escondido.org.  Students can also check out copies from the school libraries at Escondido High School, San Pasqual High School, and Orange Glen High School. The highlight of this month’s Book Club is a guest appearance by author Catherine Linka, who will discuss her book and answer questions.

A romantic, thought-provoking, and frighteningly real story, A Girl Called Fearless takes place ten years after a synthetic hormone in beef has killed fifty million American women. Avie is living the normal life of a privileged teen, dreaming about her future and what she’ll make of her life. Her father, in a desperate effort to save his struggling company, has contracted Avie in marriage to a much older and very powerful man. Now her only two choices are to either be trapped in a marriage with a controlling politician or run across the border to Canada, leaving behind her best friend Yates. As her feelings for Yates develop into something more than friendship, the decision to leave becomes more difficult, but staying could cost her life.

In addition to discussing A Girl Called Fearless, teens can share their opinions and ideas about other books they have enjoyed and propose titles for the next Burritos & Book Club meeting. The selected book will be discussed at the next meeting on Wednesday, July 6, 2016. Complimentary burritos will be provided, and all participants receive a free book or audiobook at the end of the program.
