This summer, the Escondido Public Library is kicking off its first-ever infant and toddler summer reading event, which runs from June 11th–August 4th! Parents of children, ages 0-2, may sign up at the Children’s Desk for the Dream Big, READ! Infant & Toddler Summer Reading Club (SRC). The last day to register for this program is Monday, July 30th.

Parents may pick up an Infant & Toddler SRC reading log at the Children’s Desk. Throughout the summer, parents are encouraged to participate in activities that include reading books, singing songs, and of course, attending story time events at the Library. These activities and more are listed on the reading log, and completing at least 7 out of 10 earns your little one a fabulous, age-appropriate prize!

The Infant & Toddler SRC fosters the six early literacy skills necessary to prepare children for reading and writing:

· Print Motivation – Getting your child interested in books.

· Phonological Awareness – Sounding out words.

· Vocabulary Skills – Understanding the meaning of words and/or the story.

· Narrative Skills – Developing the ability to share the details and/or ideas of a book with you.

· Print Awareness – Distinguishing between letters and pictures.

· Letter Knowledge – Learning letters and their sounds.

This program is made possible by generous support from the Friends of the Escondido Public Library. Registration is required to participate in the Summer Reading Club, but events are free and open to the public. Seating is limited, so come early. The Escondido Public Library is located at 239 South Kalmia Street in downtown Escondido. For additional information call the Children’s Department at 760-839-4837.
