Escondido Writers Group 5th Annual Writing Competition 2024
The Escondido Writer's Group Writing Competition highlights writers' intellectual and creative accomplishments in the San Diego region. This year marks our 5th year!
Submit your fiction or non-fiction (excluding poetry) writing between March 1 and March 30, 2024. The winners will be announced at the Escondido Writers Group meeting on April 16, 2024. This contest is open to anyone aged 12 and up. Every entry must stand on its own merits. Judges will not give special dispensation or more liberal consideration for youth entries.
Entries should be:
• Typed or in electronic format
• 2500-word limit, NO EXCEPTIONS
• Double-spaced, one-inch margins
• Include a cover sheet with the story's title, writer’s name, phone number, and email. The title of the entry, writer’s name, and contact information only on the cover sheet. The entry's title must be at the top right corner of each page without the writer’s name.
All entries are ‘blind’ read by the following Judges who are published writers:
Joanna Blackwell is the owner, developmental editor, and line editor of Global Bookworms, with over 7 years of experience as a freelance editor. Her editing career began in college, working on fellow students' papers and slowly expanded to authors and their manuscripts as she completed her Bachelor's degree. After finishing her degree, she brushed up on her grammar by completing Analytical Grammar and Analytical Grammar: Mechanics. She furthers her professional development by reading Editing Fiction at Sentence Level by Louise Harnby and Developmental Editing by Scott Norton. She also takes Developmental Editing: Foundations of Storytelling through Club Ed, LLC.
Sarina Cornwaite: "Growing up as a bibliophile, she was always happiest with a book, leafing through pages as authors took her on whirlwind adventures. Even while pursuing a career in education, she was interested in helping authors create enthralling adventures.
Jennifer van der Kleut is a former journalist working on her debut novel. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including AOL, Patch, the Huffington Post, ABC 7, Silicon Valley Community Newspapers, and more. She lives in Northern Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C., with her husband and two sons.
