Escondido Public Library Offers Free 3D Printing to the Public

Escondido, CA – Escondido Public Library now offers free 3D printing to anyone with a valid Escondido Public Library card! Library users may submit a 3D object for printing online via a web form at www.escondidolibrary.org/3Dprinting. The prints will be processed by Library staff to ensure they meet the criteria laid out in the 3D Printing Policy and will be available within two weeks of submission (subject to change based on length of print queue). 3D objects must take four hours or less to print, be submitted as an.stl file, and are printed in a single color. Current colors available are gray, white, black, purple, and red. This service is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Escondido Public Library.

The Library will host free public classes on a monthly basis for creating 3D printed objects using a free, web based platform called TinkerCAD. The first TinkerCAD class will be on Friday, February 28th at 4 p.m. While the class is free, space is limited and registration is required at www.escondidolibrary.org/register.

Escondido Public Library’s Lulzbot Taz 6 3D printer has been used by Library staff at STEAM/STEM outreach events at local Escondido schools and the San Diego Children's Discovery Museum, as well as for Library events such as Star Wars Day, Dads & Donuts, Digital Petting Zoo, and many others.

The Library staff affectionately named the public printer “Taz” and put it on display in the lobby, so that patrons could watch it work. Small giveaway items made by this printer were available for patrons to receive by entering weekly online raffle drawings. This printer is now available to create printed objects submitted by patrons and will be used to educate the community on how to design 3D printed objects.
