Escondido, CA –Escondido Public Library introduces Reptile Round-Up, a new reading program for children that nurtures their natural love of reading. Reptile Round-Up, for readers ages 5-12, will be held in the Children’s Room on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. beginning September 2, 2015. Children who pre-register for a 15-minute appointment read a book of their choice aloud to a friendly reptile, such as a bearded dragon. The children practice reading for fun or to improve skills in a friendly environment with a non-critical audience.
Reptile Round-Up is made possible thanks to a partnership between the Library and EcoVivarium, a local nonprofit Living Natural History Museum and educational outreach organization. Trained animal educators from EcoVivarium are on hand to introduce the animals, ensure safe animal handling, and share lizard lore. Library staff members share related books and website information to promote children’s knowledge of these fascinating animals.
Reptile Round-Up is a companion to Escondido Public Library’s long-established popular program, Love on a Leash, Paws for Reading where children, ages 5-12, read aloud to pet therapy dogs. Love on a Leash, Paws for Reading takes place on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m., beginning in September. The Library partners with the local Love on a Leash chapter and the addition of several new dogs expands the program and opportunities for readers to book appointments.
To participate in either program, children must be pre-registered, able to read independently, and accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver. Children should come prepared with a book of their choosing to read. To schedule a 15-minute session for Reptile Round-Up or Love on a Leash, Paws for Reading, call 760-839-5456. Early registration is encouraged as the number of reservations in the programs may be limited and the appointment schedules fill up fast.
