Historic Preservation

Did You Know . . .

If you own a home identified on the City's Historic Resource Inventory, Local Register of Historic Places, or located within the Old Escondido Neighborhood, please contact the City's Planning Division prior to initiating a home improvement project. Home improvement projects will be reviewed pursuant to the City's goals and guidelines for historic properties, to ensure compatibility with the preservation and treatment of historic resources. Additional review may be required if you plan to:

  • Build a fence
  • Build a garage or carport
  • Build or change a front porch
  • Change your windows
  • Construct a room addition
  • Paint the exterior
  • Replace the roof

Modification projects will be reviewed by City staff, the Staff Design Review Board, or the Planning Commission to ensure the historic character of your home is maintained with any proposed modifications.

If you purchase a home that has an existing Mills Act Contract, please review the stipulations listed within the contract and contact the Planning Division to review the list of improvements and discuss potential options for the improvement of your property's historic character.
