Escondido Creek Trail

Escondido Creek TrailAbout the Escondido Creek Trail

Construction for the Escondido Creek trail begins in February 2025. Work will take place from Citracado Parkway to North Midway Drive, with construction generally moving from west to east.

The project is expected to be completed by spring of 2026, pending any unforeseen delays. Construction hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the exception of city-recognized holidays.

A community grand opening celebration is being planned and details will be shared once they are finalized.

This project aims to encourage safe and healthy lifestyles through an improved sense of security, enhanced street crossings, fitness and play amenities, native and CA-friendly landscaping, and further opportunities for walking and jogging in addition to improvements to the bike path. The goal is to revitalize the Creek Trail Corridor through enhanced activities and partnerships with local businesses, artists, schools, and other organizations.

Project Background

Starting in early 2010, residents brought forward a vision of the Escondido Creek Trail as a linear park which resulted in the following important planning documents: Revealing Escondido Creek Vision Plan (PDF) and the Escondido Creek Trail Master Plan (PDF). Two top priorities that emerged were to complete the Missing Link bike path between Broadway and Centre City Parkway and to create safe mid-block crossings along the length of the Creek Trail.

In 2020, the city was awarded $8.5 million from the California Department of Parks and Recreation through the Prop 68 Parks and Water Bond Act of 2018 which aims to create new parks and recreation opportunities in underserved communities across California. The current Escondido Creek Trail Expansion and Renovation project would improve approximately 4.5 miles of the existing Escondido Creek Trail and add approximately 0.4 miles of new bicycle path. This project will create a double-sided trail on approximately 1.7 miles; on one side will be the existing Class I bicycle path, on the other will be a new DG trail.

On January 26, 2022, city staff and design consultant teams shared the background and latest design progress on the Escondido Creek Trail Expansion and Renovation Project.

On August 28, 2024, the Escondido City Council took two important actions. They awarded the bid to Tri-Group Construction and Development Inc for physical construction of the project and a consulting agreement with T.Y. Lin International for construction management.
