Fire Insurance Challenges

Over the past several years, it has not been uncommon for homeowners in parts of Escondido and the surrounding areas to have their current fire insurance policy rates dramatically increase or have coverage dropped entirely. This is especially true for property in Very High Fire Hazard Zones. For some homeowners, residential insurance is getting harder to find. Many homeowners who receive nonrenewable notices are often forced to seek insurance from another provider at a much higher rate. However, there are things you can do to make your property a better risk for insurance providers, which may lower your rates with some companies. It is important to understand that the Fire Department does not have influence over insurance providers, but we can help arm you with information such as your distance from a fire station or a fire hydrant and the staffing levels and ISO rating of the Escondido Fire Department.

If you or someone you know has lost their homeowner's insurance coverage due to wildfire risk, here are a few tips:

  • Contact local insurance agents or brokers within your area. Use the Home Insurance Finder tool to locate agents in your immediate vicinity and beyond, or access the Residential Insurance Company Contact List for a list of over 50 insurers that provide homeowners insurance.
  • Ask your insurance agent or broker if they are able to obtain coverage in the "surplus lines" market.
  • If you are unable to find an agent who can insure you, the California FAIR Plan is available to every homeowner as a last resort.
  • If you feel that your insurance nonrenewal was unfair, file a complaint with the CDI.
  • If you require further assistance, please contact the California Department of Insurance directly at 800-927-4357
