Escondido Creek Bikeway Missing Link Project
Purpose
Encouraging active transportation via Escondido's connected bike path.
The Project constructed a new separated Class IV Bikeway (Cycle Track) and a Class I Bike Path through the core of the City of Escondido to fill a gap between the Escondido Creek Trail on North Broadway at Woodward Avenue, and the Inland Rail Trail on Quince Street just north of the Escondido Transit Center. Some key features of the project include the bollard-separated two-way Class IV Bikeway (Cycle Track); a new bike bridge over the Escondido Creek adjacent to the existing North Broadway bridge; a new traffic signal at North Broadway and Woodward Avenue; and a new traffic signal for the crosswalk on North Broadway next to Grape Day Park.
This project encourages active transportation via Escondido's connected bike path and it was partly funded with a TransNet Active Transportation Program Grant.
Completion Date: July 2019
Project Recognized:
- 2020 ITE (Institute of Traffic Engineers) International Transportation Achievement Award for Complete Streets Category
- 2018/2019 ITE (Institute of Traffic Engineers) San Diego Project of the Year
Features
- Class IV two-way bikeway cycle track
- New traffic signal at N Broadway and Woodward Avenue intersection
- New signalized crosswalk on N Broadway north of Sherman Place, in front of the San Diego Children's Discovery Museum
Class IV Two-Way Bikeway Cycle Track
A Class IV bikeway is a facility that is for the exclusive use of bicycles and is physically separated from motored traffic with a vertical feature. The separation may include flexible posts, inflexible barriers, or on-street parking. By providing physical separation from motor traffic, Class IV bikeways can reduce the level of stress, improve comfort for more types of bicyclists, and contribute to an increase in bicycle volumes and mode share.

Project Update
April 15, 2019 - 3rd Project Update
The Contractor has installed the new bike bridge over Escondido Creek next to the North Broadway bridge. This new bike bridge connects the new Class I bike path from Woodward Avenue to the new Class IV two-way Cycle Track that runs along Grape Day Park on North Broadway.
New traffic signal poles have been installed at the intersection of North Broadway and Woodward Avenue and the traffic signal is up and running. This traffic signal provides a bicycle crossing on North Broadway that provides a connection between the existing Escondido Creek Trail and the new bikeway running along the west side of North Broadway.

New Rectangular Rapid-Flashing Beacons together with new crosswalk signage have been installed at the pedestrian and bike crossing on Quince Street just north of the Escondido Transit Center. The new flashing beacons are solar-powered and pedestrian push button activated. This crosswalk connects the new Missing Link bike path to the existing Inland Rail Trail on the west side of Quince Street.
The "Missing Link" of the Escondido Creek Bike Trail is now complete! New Class I Bike Path along Centre City Parkway and south of Escondido Creek between Quince Street and Centre City Parkway as well as the new Class IV two-way cycle track are now open.
