Become a Tutor

Overview

We need volunteers to assist English-speaking adults who want to improve their reading and writing.

Qualifications

Volunteer tutors must speak and write English, be at least 18 years old, and possess a high school diploma or GED. Tutors must have patience, a sense of humor, flexibility, and the ability to work with a diverse population.

You do not need to have previous tutoring experience. Literacy staff will provide training and ongoing support to assist you in your tutoring experience. We assess learner skill levels before matching individuals with tutors. You will have access to resources and materials, refresher training, and tutoring tips and techniques.

About Learners

Learners are English-speaking adults, 18 years or older, who may either be native speakers or have English as a second language. Many are employed, have families, are deeply invested in their children's education, and are capable of succeeding in life.

Commitment Ask

We ask for a commitment of at least one year. Tutoring sessions are 1 1/2 hours, twice a week, for a total of 3 hours per week. Tutors and learners communicate with each other to arrange the days and times for their sessions.

Where

Tutoring space is provided at the library.

How Long Students Remain in the Program

Program services are focused on the learners' objectives. There is no time limit on how long a student can be enrolled in the program. Tutors and learners are periodically interviewed to assess progress and review learners' goals and objectives. Once students have achieved basic literacy proficiency, they may be referred to other programs to advance their education.
