2014 Teen Summer Reading Club

Thank you to all of those who participated in this year's Teen Summer Reading Club. Over 200 teens registered this year and read a total of 3500 hours. Fun was had by the teens who attended our events, especially Burritos & Books and Games & Grub. For those teens that read 25 or more hours, they were further entertained by attending our Teen Lock-In.

The theme for this year's Lock-In was "Welcome to the Jungle" and so the Turrentine Room was transformed into a dense jungle, teens enjoyed chomping on jungle-themed food, "hunted" exotic animals in the children's room and crafted their own jewelry. We are sad to see the summer end, but are excited about what lies ahead for the 2015 Summer Reading Club.

Teen Art of the Week

I like the tables in the teen area. What I don't like is that when I cover them with the white paper, the tape has an issue with sticking to the table. I'm not using cheap tape, but it drives me crazy! When I replaced the paper today I used painter's tape in hopes that it will work better. Now enough of my woes, here are some fun drawings from this week. Wander over to our Flickr page to see the rest of the art from this week.

This week the tables in the teen area saw a lot of drawing action. There were quite a few nice drawings, which I took photos of, but then found a day or two later viciously scribbled over. Please respect other people's artwork by not scribbling over it or adding unnecessary male or female parts to any drawing that you find. Now that I have said my piece, here are four fun drawings from this week. Please visit our Flickr page to see all the drawings from this week.

Another pile of wonderous reads are now ready to check out at the Escondido Public Library. Here are three awesome titles that can be found on the New Books shelf in the Teen area.

More than good enough Hinterkind cruel beauty

More Than Good Enough by Crissa-Jean Chappell

Half native. Half white. One hundred percent nothing.

My mom doesn’t want me. My dad just got out of jail. They want me to go live with him on the reservation, in the Everglades. Trouble is, everybody there just ignores me. At least I get to work with Pippa on my film project at school. We used to be friends when we were like twelve. Now that we’re hanging out again it’s like old times—except she’s way cuter. The thing is, I don’t belong anywhere. I don’t fit in on the rez, and I suck at school. My dad thinks I’m an idiot, but Pippa thinks I’m all good. I don’t know what to think. Am I bad news or am I more than good enough?

Hinterkind: the waking world, vol. 1 by Ian Edginton

In a post-apocalyptic world where humans have been pushed to the edge of extinction by the creatures of fantasy and fables, THE HINTERKIND tells the story of one young woman's quest to fulfill her destiny and put the world right again.

Fifty-seven years after an unspecified biological event has all but wiped out the human race, a green hand has moved over the face of the Earth. Leaf, root and shoot have steadfastly smothered the works of man, remorselessly grinding the concrete, glass and steel back into the minerals from whence they came. Mother Nature is reclaiming what's rightfully hers but she's not the only one...

The Hinterkind have returned. They come from hiding places in the lost corners of the world: Centaurs, Satyrs, Elves, Dwarves, Ogres, Trolls, Werewolves, Vampires...

They're also known as 'the Hidden,' 'the Twilight People,' the 'walkers-in-shadow', collective names for the menagerie that mankind has hung its tales of myth and magic upon--but these aren't fairy tale creatures. They are flesh, blood and passion, and they have a long simmering hatred of humanity.

They are a divergent species. Exotic evolutionary try-outs that couldn't compete with the rapacious ape. Hunted to near extinction through fear and ignorance, they fled to the great forests and deserts, losing themselves in the shrinking wilderness of an ever-expanding world. Now the wilderness is the world and mankind is in the minority.

Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

Betrothed to the evil ruler of her kingdom, Nyx has always known her fate was to marry him, kill him, and free her people from his tyranny. But on her seventeenth birthday, when she moves into his castle high on the kingdom's mountaintop, nothing is as she expected—particularly her charming and beguiling new husband. Nyx knows she must save her homeland at all costs, yet she can't resist the pull of her sworn enemy—who's gotten in her way by stealing her heart.

The tables were covered with various drawings this week, with a few nice ones here and there. The overall effect of the all these small drawings in one area were chaotic, but also visually pleasing with all the different shapes and colors.

Below are two cute drawings that were hidden amongst the chaos of all the squiggles. Don't forget to visit our Flickr page and check out the rest of our teen art.
