Gulliver's Travels

by Jonathan Swift
04/23/2013 Categories: action classic fantasy suspense

Gulliver's TravelsGulliver's Travels is a fantasy book detailing the narration of Lemuel Gulliver. He travels across the sea and discovers interesting and vast countries very different from his own. Gulliver encounters a country where he is a giant, and another featuring a civilization of giants.

The book wasn't that bad. At face level, this story is a fantasy that explores random ideas of a country. There are some parts in the book where the ideas go over one's head, and/or parody something one wouldn't normally know about. One can get the best out of this elderly book once they know the background behind it, but otherwise it's an ok book nonetheless. I recommend this book, not only because it's a classic that everyone has to read, but it's very interesting and has ideas that are uncommon to hear about these days. Like most literary classics, it's a tad difficult to read, but don't let that be an excuse for not reading this classic.

A Clash of Kings

by George R.R. Martin
04/01/2013 Categories: action battles fantasy war

Clash of KingsClash of Kings is a continuation of the novel Game of Thrones. In this book, the houses of Westros gears up for war as the king in the North attempts to win independence from King Joffrey. Meanwhile, Stannis Bartetheon asserts his rule from the island fortress of Dragonstone and tries to wrench the loyalty of the lords of storm's end from his brother Renly. Across the sea, Daenerys Targaryen guides her people and her dragons with hopes of reclaiming her families throne.

This is an incredible book because it is full to the brim with vivid descriptions of battles, events, and plots from the point of view of the characters across the world. It is full of plot twists and realistic characters that have their own histories and secrets.

I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of fantasy or war stories. Or if you want something that will keep you up all night turning the pages, then look no further.

The Old Man and the Sea

by Ernest Hemingway
04/01/2013 Categories: action classic suspense

The Old Man and the Sea details an elderly Cuban fisherman's adventure at sea. Almost out of luck, he encounters a marlin of gargantuan proportions and engages a fierce battle with it.

I thought this book was solid, but not the best. It has a simple premise, but this works well with its deep, thoughtful ideas. Its writing is simple, but the words flow very naturally and professionally. It does feel unexciting and drawn-out at times, but mostly it depends on the reader.

I'd recommend The Old Man and the Sea to anyone who wants to read a good classic. It's a short read compared to most books, but it makes quite an impact.

Game of Thrones

by George R.R. Martin
02/19/2013 Categories: action battles fantasy older teens

Game of ThronesThe Game of Thrones is about turmoil in the seven kingdoms of Westria. After decades of peace, King Robert's assistant dies, leaving an open spot at his court. He appoints his loyal friend Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell, to fill the post. Meanwhile, tension is brewing among the other lords, who begin making alliances and preparing for war.

I loved this book because it is full of action and twists that keep you guessing. It has lots of detail that makes you feel like you are really there. This book dives into the more brutal, less romantic side of knights in shining armor and princesses in castles.

I would recommend this book to boys around my age who like books with brutal action scenes and deception. Considering this is not your typical fantasy novel, it is not for people who are fans of fairy tale endings and light-hearted stories.

Mockingjay coverKatniss is finally at District 13, which she thought didn't exist! Now she has to fight in the war against the Capitol in order for all the people of each district to get their freedom back. But there's a catch! President Snow has Peeta and the closer Katniss gets to her goal the more she hurts Peeta. Katniss has to decide if she really wants to go save all of Panem or risk losing Peeta.

I thought it was exceptionally well written. I really like how all the districts fit into the story line. Also there is a love triangle thing going on, and what teenage girl doesn't enjoy that?

I would definitely recommend this book for anyone to read. I absolutely love it because you can connect to Katniss! Also you don't know what Katniss will do next! There's so many surprises and plot twists this book will leave you at the edge of your seat.

I liked this book because it still had those hilarious characters. Plus, the combination of the action and romance is perfect. If you read City of Bones don't stop there! This book is just as good as the first. There are some great moments in this book where you just stop reading and go "Whoa!"

The Capitol does not like Katniss ever since she thought about the berries that would kill her and Peeta. Now Katniss has to find ways to get President Snow to leave her alone without getting her family and loved ones killed.

I LOVED THIS BOOK! Catching Fire is a "hang on the edge of your seat" type of book. Katniss will keep you guessing what she will do next. On top of that there is the forever looming Capital that wants her dead. Katniss is great character, she is brave and loyal to her loved ones.

This book would be great for girls who like strong feminine characters that know how to kick butt. Catching Fire is also an action thriller and will keep you guessing.
